Viva Mexico in Los Cabos!
Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, México.
In Mexico, the date of September 16 is best known as El Grito de Dolores (“The Cry of Dolores”) or an event best recognized as the “Cry for Independence”). The now famous words uttered from the small town of Dolores, near Guanajuato on September 16, 1810, marks the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence and is the most important national holiday observed in Mexico. The “Grito” was the proclamation of the Mexican War of Independence by Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, a Roman Catholic priest.
Hidalgo and several working class peasants were involved in a planned revolt against the Spanish colonial government, when several protesting organizers were betrayed. Fearing his arrest, Hidalgo commanded his brother Mauricio, as well as Ignacio Allende and Mariano Abasolo to go with a number of other armed men to make the sheriff release the pro-independence inmates on the night of September 15. They managed to set eighty of them free. Around 6:00 am September 16, 1810, Hidalgo ordered the church bells to be rung and gathered his congregation. Flanked by Allende and Juan Aldama, he addressed the people in front of his church, encouraging them to revolt.
The Battle of Guanajuato, was the first major engagement of the insurgency that occurred four days later. Mexico’s independence would not be effectively declared from Spain in the Declaration of Independence by the Mexican Empire until September 27, 1821, after a decade of war.
Each year on the night of September 15 at around eleven in the evening, the President of Mexico rings the bell of the National Palace in Mexico City. After the ringing of the bell, he repeats a cry of patriotism (a Grito Mexicano) based upon the “Grito de Dolores”, with the names of the important heroes of the Mexican War of Independence and ending with the threefold shout of ¡Viva México! from the balcony of the palace to the assembled crowd in the Plaza de la Constitución, (or Zócalo), one of the largest public plazas in the world. A similar celebration occurs in cities and towns all over Mexico, and this area is no different as Cabo San Lucas holds their annual celebration at the Municipal Sports Complex on the outskirts town known as Delegacion, while in San Jose del Cabo, the party is held at the plaza in front of the Catholic Church of the city’s central art district.
A festive day marked by parades, patriotic programs, drum and bugle and youth marching band competitions as well as the long-standing Mexican tradition of beer and alcohol consumption. And like similar federal holidays in the U.S. when Mexicans work on September 16 they receive double their hourly wage and sometimes triple their pay depending on what day the historic Mexican Independence celebration falls. Flags are for sale in abundance beginning in August and the national pride amongst its citizens reach an all time fervor and the words “Viva Mexico” take on an added sense of happiness and camaraderie.
