Stop Light Restaurant
Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico.
Stop Light Restaurant Cabo San Lucas – Ok, it’s back and has been for over a year and a lot of locals in Cabo are delighted for it’s return. If you just happened to be in Cabo in the latter part of the 90’s and in the start of the new Millennium, you may remember a popular restaurant called the Stop Light and it was located next to Squid Roe on the main boulevard. Not only was it a good restaurant, it was a great place to people watch. Times change and so do locations. A couple of years ago the Stop Light Cocina Mexicana reopened behind the Office Depot on the bypass road. They trimmed some fat off of their menu and then decided to go with a Mexican food only menu. The owner is still Jose and his son Abraham is the head chef who studied at the Culinary Institute in Guadalajara for three years.
As you enter the restaurant, you will notice the openness which is different from other restaurants in Cabo which seems to be closely packed tables, in other words, you have room to move. The menu is simple, but with enough selections that you will not feel that something is missing. Lets start with two of my favorite Mexican appetizers, Guacamole or Tortilla Soup. The Tortilla Soup at the Stop Light was one of my favorites in Cabo and it has not changed. Nothing better on a cool night in Cabo to warm the body and the soul. If you need a beer to wash it down with, you can have one for less than $3usd.

Lets get down to the main courses and there are many to choose from. If you are into fish, try the Veracruzana which is only $8usd. It is a large fillet that is covered with sautéed veggies and rice and cooked to perfection, never dry or overcooked. They have four different shrimp dishes that average $12usd per serving and come with six shrimp. If your a meat lover, I have two choices for you. One of the things I have learned by living in Cabo for the past 24 years is that you do not need to spend a lot of money to have a flavor able piece of meat and if you have never tried Arrachera, you’re missing the boat. It is a flank steak that has been marinated for a couple of days so it has great flavor, but the other thing is this, it is as tender as a fillet as long as you do not overcook it, medium is perfect and your cost is $11usd. My other choice is a marinated pork shank that has been slow cooked for hours. It falls off of the bone and melts in your mouth, cost $9usd.
If you love Mexican food and are really hungry, try the Mexican combo at the Stop Light Restaurant. It comes with a chicken sope, a chicken enchilada and a chile relleno. It is a large plate that also includes beans, rice and guacamole, cost $8usd. If you like chicken fajitas, you’ll love theirs and again the cost is only $8usd. In all honesty, I have never had a bad meal there, so I know you will not be disappointed if you give them a try. Another thing I like the Stop Light for is it’s breakfast. Traditional Mexican dishes like Huevo’s Ranchero’s or a shrimp omelet.
