No need to ice the Champagne, choose party favors or buy roadside fireworks. If you’re in Los Cabos over the new year period, there’ll be someone to take care of those chores for you.
All visitors really need to do is choose from among the many great New Year’s Eve parties taking place in cape communities Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo. Both cities have their charms, but Cabo San Lucas is far and away the most popular for this particular holiday, largely because of the magnificent fireworks show that takes place over Médano Beach each year at midnight.
The hotels and cantinas that fringe this two-mile stretch of golden sand have a front-row seat for this annual spectacular, and thus will be among the most popular places to party during the final hours of 2016, as well as the early hours of 2017.
Casa Dorada Los Cabos Resort & Spa is famed for its New Year’s Eve shindigs, which in previous incarnations have ranged from Barefoot Formals to elegant White Parties. This year the scenically situated beachfront resort is featuring a Hawaii Luau theme, with fire dancing, live music from band La Tribu and the resident DJ, an elaborate buffet from Chef Executive Chef Francisco Aguirre of the signature onsite restaurant 12 Tribes, and of course sparkling wine to accompany the midnight toast and fireworks display. Mango Deck, the unofficial but universally recognized “party central” on Cabo’s biggest and most popular beach, will of course be throwing a memorable bash. Why? Because that’s what they do! Reserve a table and enjoy dinner, drinks, live music and the “best seat in the house” for the explosive arrival of 2017. For reservations, call (624) 144-4919.
Nearby Breathless Cabo San Lucas Resort & Spa, the chic adults-only property that opened in December 2015 at the juncture of the marina and Médano Beach, is showcasing its own brand of New Year’s cheer at their hip rooftop lounge Purple. Guests are invited to don their finest violet, lavender, lilac, magenta, mauve and eggplant hued attire for the Disco Purple New Year’s Eve Party Live, which boasts late night beats courtesy of Sugar Shake Band and Superlover DJ by Suara label. Breathless is currently offering a special New Year’s Eve deal: stay four nights or longer over the New Year and January 1st is free. For tickets or reservations, call (624) 104-9500.
Speaking of new resorts with rooftop lounges, The Cape, the stunning new Thompson Hotel that opened in July 2015 at Sunset Point, is hosting its own New Year’s Eve blowout. Want to see Land’s End lit up by fireworks from the hotel’s majestic Monuments Beach vantage point? Dance-friendly DJs and a Champagne toast only add to this special experience, which is expected to continue until the wee hours of the morning.
The fireworks show will also visible from the Cabo San Lucas Marina boardwalk, where benchmark local restaurant Solomon’s Landing is hosting its annual New Year’s Eve dinner. The seven course feast includes an entrée of filet mignon, plus all the house drinks you can handle. To save a spot, call (624) 143-3050 or click here.
As long as you’re ringing in the New Year in México, feel free to take part in some of the country’s traditional celebrations and superstitions. It is customary, for example, to eat twelve grapes as the clock tolls twelve times at midnight, as this act is said to ensure good fortune during each of the months of the upcoming year.
Color-coded underwear is also a thing, since certain colors are said to have almost magical predictive properties for the New Year. Wearing red lingerie on New Year’s Eve may not be guaranteed to enhance your love live in the immediate future, but it certainly can’t hurt. Green undergarments, meanwhile, are preferred by those seeking financial success.
Carrying or walking around a suitcase at midnight supposedly brings good fortune with travel, but since you’re partying in Los Cabos that wish has obviously already been granted.
¡Feliz Navidad y Próspero Año Nuevo!
