Restaurante Los Tres Gallos
Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, México.
Restaurant Los Tres Gallos (Los Tres Gallos Restaurant) was named for three great stars of the golden age of Mexican cinema—Pedro Infante, Jorge Negrete, and Javier Solis were collectively referred to as Los Tres Gallos—this charming downtown restaurant pays homage to the famed “roosters” with a series of portraits that are displayed at the gift shop and indoor dining area. The music of these crooners also plays in the background; their wonderful rancheras, along with the flowery, hacienda-style courtyard ambience and warm service, lend the entire place an air of romance and nostalgia.
Los Tres Gallos is one of the area’s benchmark providers of traditional Mexican cuisine. Looking for specialties like huauzontle, cochinita pibil, or enchiladas with mole sauce? This is the place. The mole con pollo is spectacular, but meat lovers will also enjoy terrific entrées like arrachera a la parilla and cecina de Yecapixtla Morelos, a salt-cured beef that is grilled with cebollitas (leeks) and nopales (a vegetable made from pads of prickly pear cactus). Have a yen for something a little lighter? Try the signature Los Tres Gallos salad with lettuce, jicama, avocado, pineapple, red onion, cherry tomatoes, cilantro, peeled orange slices, and chile tajin.
The food is incredible, but it’s also quite affordable. With the exception of escamole, a seasonal dish made with ant eggs, nothing on the dinner menu costs more than $16 U.S. Although the chef hails from Veracruz, the cooking crew hails from all over the country, lending an authenticity to the many regional dishes that headline the menu. From hand-rolled tortillas to house made salsas, Los Tres Gallos is the real deal, and reservations are definitely recommended.
