Cabo Wabo Cantina 30th Anniversary
Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, México.
If there was ever a city landmark in Cabo San Lucas, it’s the internationally famous, Cabo Wabo Cantina, which opened in 1990, is generally referred to simply as Cabo Wabo and is owned by the rock star legend, Sammy Hagar.
After its MTV advertised premier 30 years ago, Cabo Wabo has since become a mandatory tourist stop for just about everyone who visits Cabo San Lucas, even cruise ship passengers who only come ashore and stroll through town a few hours. Having been featured on MTV, VH1, E-Channel, Travel Channel, and hundreds of other social media outlets and the Cabo Wabo Cantina has distinguished itself as the Hollywood Walk of Fame Mexican-style destination for all travelers who arrive during the calendar year which has propelled Cabo’s world-wide fame as a spring break, wonderful beaches and sunny weather dream-like vacation paradise.
”In 1990, Cabo San Lucas was pretty small for such an elaborate nightclub. Later, when this town at the tip of Baja California grew into the prominent vacation destination that it is today, it seemed as if I had looked into a crystal ball,” said owner Sammy Hagar. ”The truth is that the concept was evolutionary and the reality of what it has become is based on small steps, a lot of mistakes, a few good people and tons of luck.”
Executive Manager and partner, Jorge Viaña, spoke of the Cantina’s inability to celebrate its 30-year anniversary last April 2020, due to the Coronavirus pandemic. Since then, other changes that Jorge alluded to was the closure of the southern stair entrance and original restaurant location. Now the restaurant is located inside the dance floor area in front of the live band stage, where all tables are strategically spaced apart per social distancing Covid-19 safety protocol.
Cabo Wabo also installed hot water sanitizing steam drinking glasses and plate dishwashing machines. ”We were in Cabo to celebrate the Christmas Holidays and New Year’s and Cabo Wabo’s COVID precautions were so good. Temperature checks upon entering, the disinfecting of shoes and hands really put us at ease. The beers, nachos and especially the fish tacos were amazing. And their food and drink service was of course, simply superb.
Beer was ice cold. Their friendly and attentive staff followed covid safety precautions, and while the slightly toned down entertainment atmosphere was to be expected because of our current covid times, we had a wonderful time, once again,” said Hector Lopez, originally from Madera, California, who spearheads the Deported Veterans foundation offices in Tijuana, Mexico.
