Update November 12, 2015 – Three homes are now complete, with three more homes in process.

The Cabo Hurricane Fund (CHF) established itself as a leading relief effort in the days and weeks following Hurricane Odile in September 2014. Beyond organizing and delivering key emergency supplies, the leadership of the fund established a process to provide home reconstruction grants to vulnerable communities.

The grant process starts when families submit an application for support from Cabo Hurricane Fund. To date, more than 200 applications have been received. Each family’s situation is closely evaluated, and then they are matched with whatever CHF programs they are eligible to participate in. Currently there are several CHF programs providing reconstruction support ranging from total home rebuilds to housing resources and guidance.

Isaac Garcia, the Project Manager for the Cabo Hurricane Fund, has been working hard with municipal officials and other local agencies to expedite the rebuilding process for families. “There is a social commitment behind this project and a great ethical responsibility that I am guided by as an architect. We have determined a clear process to address the needs.”

This past Thursday, April 16th 2015, Architect Garcia and his crew started building new homes for several families in Colonia Gastélum, north of San Lucas. The ground breaking comes just seven months since Odile wreaked havoc in Baja Sur. CHF anticipates launching several more similar projects throughout 2015 in other colonias in San Lucas and San Jose. With design and construction resources established, CHF leadership plans to continue a spend-down strategy of the funds raised that focuses investment in the most underserved communities across Los Cabos.
