A Round-up of Current and Upcoming Events in Los Cabos

Visitors to Los Cabos during the next two months will find no dearth of things to do. In addition to ongoing seasonal events like Circuito Cultural in Cabo San Lucas and Art Walk in San José del Cabo, the cape cities are also hosting—or preparing to host—a number of high-profile annual events, ranging from music festivals and sporting competitions to large-scale charity benefits and nearly half a millennium old birthday bashes.

Here’s a look at some of the most notable current and upcoming festivities:

Happening Now

LPFF

Baja Sur’s capital city of La Paz celebrates its birthday each year with a Festival de Fundación featuring food, art and live music.

2nd Annual Patrick Davis Country in Cabo Songwriting Festival/ April 30–May 3

Last night’s show kicked off of the second annual Country in Cabo concert series and songwriting seminar at Bar Esquina, the hip onsite restaurant at Médano Beach based boutique lodging Bahia Hotel & Beach Club, and early returns suggest another resounding success. Patrick Davis has returned as headliner, but with a whole new cast of chart-topping friends, including Dancing with the Stars and American Idol participants Chuck Wicks and Janell Wheeler, respectively, as well as rising stars Django Walker, Johnny Bulford, JT Hodges, and Matt Warren. Davis and Co. will perform again at 9 p.m. tonight and tomorrow, with a free, open-to-the-public songwriting seminar offered on Sunday, May 3,  5–7 p.m.

La Paz Festival de Fundación / April 29–May 4

The longest running birthday party in Baja California Sur takes place each May in La Paz, when the state’s capital and largest city celebrates the day it was sighted by 1535 by Hernan Cortés with a multiday Festival de Fundación featuring live music and local art, culture and cuisine. One of the annual highlights is the reenactment of the first landing of the Spaniards, but activities, concerts and special events are now taking place daily along the malecón, and around Plaza Constitución (also known as Jardín Velasco), the city’s central plaza. For more information about the event schedule, check out the festival program here.

The country’s largest nautical expo returns to the Cabo San Lucas Marina on May 14-16, 2015.

Upcoming

Día de las Madres / Sunday, May 10

The date for Mother’s Day varies slightly each year in the United States, but in México it’s fixed, and is celebrated annually on May 10th. In 2015, the dates are aligned, so there should be no confusion about when to honor mom. In Los Cabos, most schools display poems or artwork dedicated to mothers, and larger scale programs with speeches and skits are also common, particularly at Plaza Amelia Wilkes – the town square – in Cabo San Lucas, and Plaza Mijares in San José del Cabo. Local businesses often have their own promotions, as well. For more info, visit the traditional holidays page on Events Los Cabos.

6th Annual Cabo Marine Show / May 14–16

The country’s premier nautical expo returns to Docks L-M-N on the Cabo San Lucas Marina, with a three day celebration of the latest marine products, as well as local art, live music, and great food at nearby restaurants like Baja Cantina Dockside, Solomon’s Landing and Captain Tony’s. The new and used boat market is an increasingly popular feature of the Cabo Marine Show, and organizers are expecting the “in-water” display to be even larger than last year. For more information about the show, go to Cabo Marine Show, contact sergio@bahiacabo.com, or call +52 1 (555) 434-3747. For information about 25% room discounts at the Bahia Hotel & Beach Club, call 1-866-99-BAHIA or email reservations@bahiacabo.com (rooms are subject to availability, and some restrictions do apply).

Surf’s up in San José del Cabo in June, when the Los Cabos Open of Surf returns for the 3rd consecutive year to Zippers point break on Playa Costa Azul.

Los Cabos Open of Surf / June 9–14

Summer is the premier season for surfing in Los Cabos—particularly on the Sea of Cortés side—and the sport’s biggest event locally is held each June at the Zippers point break on Costa Azul Beach in San José del Cabo. The Los Cabos Open of Surf premiered in 2013 as the only 6-Star ASP (Association of Surfing Professionals) sanctioned event in México, but was expanded to include women in 2014, and now in 2015 will be part of the Women’s qualifying series, as well as a Men’s and Women’s Pro Junior Event. Fish, golf, and enjoy live music performances from the likes of Sammy Hagar…all for a good cause…at the 19th annual Stars and Stripes Tournament.

19th Annual Stars & Stripes Tournament / June 25–28

The latest news surrounding the 19th Stars & Stripes Tournament is the inclusion of rock star Sammy Hagar, who is scheduled to headline the after-dinner entertainment on Saturday, June 27. But the big news is that this annual event has raised over 20 million dollars for youth charities since its founding in 1997, and is hoping to raise 3 million more this year, when over 600 people are expected to descend on the luxurious seaside Hilton Los Cabos for four days of fishing, golf and first-class live entertainment. The 2015 event schedule includes sportfishing for dorado, wahoo, tuna and billfish, championship-level golf at Chileno Bay and the Jack Nicklaus designed Club Campestre, and nightly performances from “The Red Rocker” and others.
