San José del Cabo, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, México
The Silver Moon Gallery was founded in 2000, and it pioneered the notion of promoting Mexican folk art in Los Cabos. Here, as directed by Armando Sanchez and Rocio Camarillo, it provides a space for artisans from across Mexico to display their Works. The gallery’s goal is to preserve and promote the traditions and customs of Mexican folk art.
The different pieces and styles represent the towns and people who have for generations passed down their techniques, using what Mother Nature has provided to go beyond crafting utility tools and instead leave a beautiful footprint of cultural expression. Their work shows how elaborate and detailed the work of a Mexican folk art master can be. The Silver Moon Gallery represents potter Mata Ortíz Juan Quezada, winner of a national arts award; Pancho Bautista, an internationally celebrated Huichol artist known for his large Vochol pieces exhibited at the Museum of Folk Art; “Tree of Life” artist Tiburcio Soteno from Metepec, in Mexico state; Carlo Magno Pedro Martinez with his black clay from Oaxaca; Hilario Alejos Madrigal who specializes in glazed clay from Michoacán; Carlos and Albert with papier-mâché from Tlaquepaque; Jacobo Angeles and Zeny Fuentes with wood carvings from Oaxaca; and The Linares family with alebrijes catrinas fro Mexico; as well as many other museum-quality, collectible pieces.
