Huerta Los Tamarindos - Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Mexico

The farm-to-table dining scene in Los Cabos began as an outgrowth of Baja Med, the peninsular culinary movement stressing fresh, local ingredients and Mediterranean accents that rose to prominence regionally in the first decade of the 21st century, and is now recognized throughout the world. The two great proponents of this rustic and intimate dining style locally are Flora Farms and Huerta Los Tamarindos, both of whom operate organic farm-based restaurants in the same general area–just outside of San José del Cabo–and also offer tours, cooking classes, and special event services.

Originally used for sugarcane farming, Huerta Los Tamarindos’ 17-acres of fertile soil have been dedicated to the growth of organic produce since 2003, including tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, zucchini, greens, and herbs. The property is certified 100% organic, meaning no pesticides or other chemicals are used, but natural compost is, and crops are rotated on a regular basis to balance nutrients.

The excellent onsite garden restaurant, Los Tamarindos, is the property’s primary attraction, offering an array of delicious weekly specials: vegetarian options like roasted tomato soup, Mediterranean couscous, sundried tomatoes and flatbread, baked eggplant rolls, and chile rellenos; and meatier fare such as baked free range cornish game hen, Dijon rabbit, baked duck with figs and green beans, and the ever popular regional goat. Fresh local seafood is also on tap–try the octopus with arugula–as are healthy desserts, from passion fruit mousse to mango jelly with Mennonite cheese. Fine wines from Baja California’s wine country, Valle de Guadalupe, and beyond balance out the dining experience.

Tour participants are welcomed with a glass of iced tea or lemonade, and given an introduction to the property by an agricultural engineer and expert in organic cultivation. Next comes a stroll through the fields to sample fruits, vegetables and herbs, and an up-close look at the process of organic farming. After a Q & A session, the 50-minute tour concludes with a small organic cooking demonstration, light appetizers and refreshments.

Wedding and special event services are also available, and the property can accommodate up to 400 guests in its events garden. Visitors can also do a bit of shopping, browsing local arts and crafts at Lulu’s Shop.

The restaurant at Huerta Los Tamarindos is open from noon – 10 p.m. every day but Tuesday, when it’s closed. For reservations and directions, call (624) 105-6031 or email lulu@huertalostamarindos.com.
