El Medano Beach Watersports

Cooling off on the main beach in Cabo San Lucas is a people-watchers' dream. El Médano beach, a short walk from downtown, is also a mecca for watersports. With calm waters most of the time, the goings-on in the bay are a spectator sport alone. Various watercraft cruise the beach, vying for position with the crowd. Water-skiers bob and twist, Yamaha Waverunners churn more waves, and parasailers look down from brightly colored rigs. In the distance, graceful kayaks glide towards Land's End as paddles dip and gleam in the golden sun. Glass bottom boats ply the curious out to the arch, the culmination of Baja California's nearly 1,000-mile long peninsula. Watching from the Médano Beach sand across the Cabo San Lucas harbor, the scene takes on a vaguely surrealistic character. Occasionally, the odd skydiver or two lands to loud cheers. In Cabo San Lucas, the only limit is your budget and energy level.

If you rent a Waverunner or Jet Ski from your hotel activities desk or one of the beach sports centers, enjoy yourself, but remember that they cannot be used around the arch area, and should always be used with caution. Pay attention to larger boat traffic, and please, don't drink and drive. Prices run around $35 per half hour, to $60 per hour. Do everyone a favor and rent only from a reputable, established source.

Paddle kayaks and canoes, at $10 to $15 per hour, can be paddled from Médano to Land's End and Lover's beach. Watch the current and stay well away from the rocks. Two-hour tours, with a guide, are $25 per person. If its been a while since you have done anything athletic, don't be surprised if you wake up stiff the next day...it's harder than it looks. If the wind's up, and you are brave, rent a windsurfer for $15 an hour, or if you prefer not to get quite that wet, hire a Hobie Cat for $25 to $30. Fairly easy to master without lengthy instruction, these small catamarans are as much fun as they look. Ever tried salt water skiing? Blast around the bay and show off both your slalom and your tan. Available by the half or full hour, from $40.

Parasailing
Strapping yourself into a harness connected to a large reel of tow rope attached to a boat is going to give you the ride of your life. Floating above the sparking waters of Cabo San Lucas Bay is fun, easy and safe. Parasailing rates are from $30 for 10 minutes on a 600-foot line. There are several companies in Cabo San Lucas to choose from, as well as one in San José del Cabo located along Palmilla or Costa Azul beaches. It's a Los Cabos vacation memory that will last a lifetime.

Kayak Adventures - Tio Sports
Experience the true unspoiled Cape region of Los Cabos with an eco-conscious kayaking tour to hidden beaches and sheltered coves. Half or full day guided adventures are offered through Nomadas del Baja or Los Lobos del Mar, both located in San Jose del Cabo. Both promise a low guide to client ratio, ensuring your safety and personal attention to your questions and needs. Nomadas feature user-friendly, very comfortable one or two person Cobra kayaks. With a longer sleeker hull, Cobras are very stable and excellent for beginners. Intermediate and advanced users will find them fast, with excellent performance in ocean conditions.

Kayak adventures include a day trip to Cabo Pulmo with optional snorkeling equipment, transportation and lunch; and local morning and sunset Eco-Tours. Two to five day adventures are also offered to Baja California's remote ocean areas. All camping equipment, meals and expert instruction are included. Prices for kayaking range from $55 to $109 per person although longer excursions (2-5 days) are based on the requirements for the trip. Reservations must be made at least 12 hours in advance at any activities desk.

Kayakers traditionally have an extremely high regard for the environment. Be prepared to bring back any trash you create, and pick up a piece of trash from the beach to leave it even better than when you arrived.

Each kayaking adventure offers its own extras, from breakfast to dinner and beverages. All adventures are provided with necessary safety equipment and snorkeling gear. You'll need your bathing suit, comfortable outwear, hat, sun screen, towel, sunglasses and camera.
