The skies are clear. The sun is shining. And the beach is as inviting as ever. Despite egregiously misleading and erroneous reports coming out of the United States, the Baja California Sur resort towns of Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, collectively known as Los Cabos, are safe and sound after Hurricane Jimena steered roughly 100 miles west of the southernmost tip of the Baja California Peninsula.

While the hurricane ravaged cities such as Mulegé and Constitución, both hundreds of miles to the north, Los Cabos was only minimally affected.

Forecasters had expected a near-Category 5 Jimena to make landfall in Los Cabos, and national and municipal government agencies acted swiftly and effectively in anticipation of the hurricane. The government issued a precautionary emergency declaration, and the ports and airport were temporarily closed. The measures, though appreciated, fortunately proved unnecessary.

“Anxiety was high as the storm grew closer,” says Lauren Glenn, a year-round San José del Cabo resident and regular Los Cabos Magazine contributor. “[But] the only indication that there was even an actual hurricane passing through was some wind and large surf. All that stress and angst for nothing!”

“The difference between this and other hurricanes—all this one brought, thank God, was a little bit of rain and wind,” remembers Nestor Duarte, a host at O Mole Mío restaurant and bar in Cabo San Lucas. “Now everything is perfect.”

In fact, winds never reached more than 30 miles per hour, and local radio station Cabo Mil 96.3 FM reports that there was only 1.06 inches of rainfall recorded. Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo residents and hotels were never without water, power, telephone, or Internet service. Contrary to many reports, no state of emergency has been declared in Los Cabos; none was needed. And officials have reopened the ports as well as the airport in San José del Cabo.

What does this mean to the average traveler? Feel safe and secure in your decision to visit Los Cabos. The area’s infrastructure has remained securely intact. Any potential danger from Jimena, now downgraded to a tropical depression and hovering northeast of Santa Rosalía in northern Baja California Sur, is long gone. And the beaches are calling your name.
