FROM PUCCINI TO TIN-PAN-ALLEY FOR JANUARY BENEFIT OPERA CONCERT
|
|
For the third time in a row, the annual Los Cabos Opera Event will be held in the newly remodeled El Galeon Restaurant, on Marina Blvd. across the street from the Dolphin Center, in Cabo San Lucas. This year, however, a new twist has been given to the concert program, due to the collaboration between the International Opera Guild of Los Cabos and the Optimist Club of Cabo San Lucas, to combine their efforts to produce one incredibly fabulous musical event, which will be called “The Gala Opera and Broadway Dinner Concert”.
In previous years, the Opera Guild had arranged its annual concert with eminent lead singers from the Portland, Oregon, Opera Company; and the Optimist Club organized a nearly yearly musical event with the prestigious opera and concert star Demetra George.

There will be an added effect of versatility in this combined event for 2007, though, which will take place on Saturday, January 20th, by bringing in to the second half of the program some numbers of light opera, songs from some of Hollywood’s most memorable movies, and many popular Broadway Hit-Tunes, such as the famous melodies of composers like Jerome Kerns, Franz Lehar, and Victor Herbert.
One of the very talented young sopranos from the Portland Opera House that came down and donated her work for last January’s concert, Katherine Brim, will be sharing the spotlight with Beverly Hills’ Emmy-nominated Demetra George, singing arias from famous operas during the first half of the program. They will be accompanied by accomplished male soloists, singing both individual solo numbers, as well as duets with the ladies: Eric Castro, a renowned baritone from Los Angeles, and a prominent bass-tone vocalist originally from Mexico City, Ariel Carranza, rounding out this impressive group of performers. All of the singers will be accompanied on the piano by no other than the fabulous musician, well-known to Los Cabos, Dr. Richard Weiss, from Santa Barbara, California.
The seated dinner on the evening of the event will begin promptly at 6:30 p.m., and the performance will start at 7:30. The food is GREAT at El Galeon, and you won’t be disappointed when you try it; and even the service has been very good at the opera events every time that they’ve been held at El Galeon. Arrangements and program coordination have been done by Annette Farmer, a long-time Opera and Fine Arts supporter and benefactor in Portland, Oregon, as well as the present, and Founding, President of the Opera Guild International of Los Cabos. Proceeds for the event will be donated to the very worthy project of English Class Scholarships for the KIDSMART (Very Bright, Straight A & B+ Students from Very Poor Local Families) Program of the Cabo San Lucas Optimist Club; web-site: www.kidsmartcabo.com. Tickets can be obtained for a donation fee of $75.00 US, including dinner and the concert; and valet parking will be provided at the entrance to the restaurant.
This marvelous event for lovers of fine music has been a sell-out every year, and there is a limited capacity in El Galeon, so it is advisable to get your tickets as soon as possible.
