Hurricane John - Cabo San Lucas - September 1, 2006 -
Updates and Photographs from Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico
When Hurricane John reached Los Cabos Region of Baja California Sur, Mexico Friday (September 1, 2006), it was downgraded to category 2, with winds up to 110 mph. It left no major damages in urban areas of San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.
The Los Cabos International Airport is receiving flights on schedule and there are no delays caused by the hurricane. We were without internet service until around 12 noon on Monday, September 3rd. Most businesses and institutions (restaurants, shopping centers, banks, etc.) resumed normal activity on Monday (September 4th). Many hotels have reestablished operation, and the remaining ones are to start welcoming guests around Wednesday (September 6th).
The links below will show photographs and comments of the Los Cabos area after Hurricane John headed north.
Hurricane John Updates and comments from Pisces Sportfishing Fleet
August 31, 2006 - Hurricane John, the hurricane that wasn't........so far we have no effects of any importance with this storm. In fact recent reports show that John has veered to the right, taking it over the East Cape rather than Cabo. The hurricane is small, hurricane force winds extend outwards from the eye for only 25 miles, tropical storm winds extend outwards for 80 miles. So far in Cabo there are no big waves, at least on the Pacific where I am, seas are calm, I can see blue sky and there is no wind. Intermittent rain only, but even this is not heavy. We are thankful that the storm has gone from category four three days ago to a tropical storm, prayers work!

September 7, 2006 -
We have a much shorter report this week due to the port being closed last Friday and Saturday and very few boats fishing throughout the week. This was due to hurricane John and the projections for it to make a direct hit on Cabo. Anglers cancelled their trips en masse and hotels redirected them to other resorts. Airlines did not fly in or out of Cabo for two days either. However, thankfully we only got winds to 35 mph early on Saturday plus rain, in fact we had rain nearly every day this week, turning Cabo into a Hawaii look-alike. After the stormy weather boats were on an exploratory mission to see where the fish would be. It was almost a given that dorado would appear due to debris in the water but billfish are a bit more tricky. First day we fished was the 3rd and the only boat to get a marlin to stick was "Ni Modo" with a striped released at the 95 spot as well as a dorado boated. Other boats saw quite a few marlin and sailfish but couldn't get any serious hook ups.
