Newly Opened Sammy G’s Promises Hot Food, Cold Beer, and Good Times
The way things are going, the one block stretch of Calle Emiliano Zapata between Miguel Hidalgo and Matamoros in Cabo San Lucas may soon be known as Galluzzo Street.
Salvatore’s, a charming Italian eatery located in the courtyard of Siesta Suites, has built a loyal following over the last few years due to its winning combination of superb quality and very generous portions. But owner Tim Galluzzo has recently upped the ante by opening two more businesses on the downtown block: the Italian-themed takeout restaurant Pasta Works, and the sports bar Sammy G’s Bar and Grill, which opened earlier this year, appropriately enough, on Super Bowl Sunday.
Of course, calling Sammy G’s a sports bar is a bit liking calling Dean Martin a singer. In other words, the designation lacks the requisite scope to cover the breadth of the place’s appeal and accomplishments.
Yes, there are high-definition televisions showing the latest sporting events—including a gargantuan 106 incher that seems to render players life-size—as well as dart boards, and a regulation sized pool table (there will soon be two, plus shuffleboard). But Sammy G’s also showcases some rather elegant touches, ranging from warm wood and leather furnishings to exposed brick, a soothing stone waterfall, and a wine list that would be the envy of many a local fine dining establishment.
Sammy G’s is named for Tim Galluzzo’s father and one of his sons, who share the same moniker. Sammy G fils is the on-site chef, and his pub-style menu features traditional American favorites like burgers, hot dogs, and fudge sundaes, as well as Italian specialties such as bruschetta, Caprese salad, sweet and spicy sausage, and pizza. It’s a menu that will appeal to both children (s’mores topped with chocolate and ice cream, anyone?) and adults, with the latter sure to be impressed by the trademark Galluzzo recipe of quality, affordability, and hearty portions. Nothing on the menu tops $10 U.S., and the food is excellent.
The burgers may be the best in town. There are a baker’s dozen burger choices, including classic cheese and bacon burgers, the signature Sammy G’s topped with sauteed mushrooms, black olives, and choice of cheese, and the Galluzzo with ham, bacon, fried egg, onion, lettuce, tomato, and dill pickle spread. Fish and veggie burgers are also on tap, as are more exotic offerings like Greek lamb and Thai chicken burgers.
Beer, wine, and liquors may also be found in abundance, of course. Particularly wine. Sammy G’s has an extensive collection of international selections protected behind glass in temperature controlled conditions (and aesthetically pleasing ones, as well) along its exposed brick wall. By the glass options are also available, and unlike many bars, where opened bottles are soon oxidized beyond drinkability, Sammy G’s has a special cooler designed to keep opened wine fresh for up to one month.
Due to the extensive downtown road construction currently in progress, Sammy G’s is still a bit of a hidden gem. But the hearty, affordable fare and congenial atmosphere suggest this place will soon be one of the most popular drinking and dining spots in Cabo San Lucas.
