This weekend promises two days of heaven for aficionados of improvisation and syncopated rhythms, as well as those seeking romantic food, drink, and activities options for Valentine’s Day, as San José del Cabo kicks off its second annual Jazz Weekend with a series of jazz concerts at the Plaza del Pescador February 14–15, 2014.

San Jose Jazz

San Jose del Cabo’s second annual Jazz Weekend is scheduled for February 14–15, 2014 at the Plaza del Pescador.

Plaza del Pescador, the site of the concert series, has quickly become one of the city’s hottest gathering spots. Not only is the plaza within easing walking distance from more than 4,500 hotel rooms but it’s also conveniently located on the Paseo Malecón San José, the boulevard that borders the luxurious resorts of the Playa Hotelera. And it boasts a number of popular, if relatively new, bars and restaurants, including two with musical associations: Rock & Brews, founded by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of the rock band KISS, and Jazz Tapas Bar, a hip eatery and wine bar whose interior pays homage to jazz legends like Billie Holiday and Louis Armstrong.

The second annual San José del Cabo Jazz Weekend lineup will, like its predecessor, feature some of the best contemporary Latin jazz performers, including familiar local faces like singer Daline Jones and keyboardist Diego Ramirez. The two standouts of the Los Cabos music scene play together regularly at area hot spots like Cerritos Beach Club and Surf, Club Cascadas, Los Cabos Winery, The Office on the Beach, and Voila Bistro. Jones and Ramirez are scheduled to perform at the Jazz Weekend concert series  Saturday, February 15, at 9 p.m.

The Plaza del Pescador concert site provides convenient access for guests staying at resorts along the city’s Playa Hotelera.

Buenos Aires–born keyboardist, composer, and recording artist Nahuel Bailo is another name that should be familiar to local jazz connoisseurs, due to his frequent performances at local clubs and resorts. Less familiar, yet widely heralded musicians scheduled to perform include Arturo Ramirez, Memo Ruiz, Grupo Paxx, Carolina Vargas, Jorge Tito Rodriguez, Javier Cantú, Monique Mendoza, Daryl Currie, and Javier (Kukin) Carmona.

Valentine’s Day festivities begin at 5:45 p.m. on February 14 with an event inauguration, followed by musical performances from 6 p.m.–11:30 p.m. On Saturday, February 15th, musical performances are scheduled from 5:30 p.m.–11:30 p.m. Event sponsors include the government of Los Cabos and FONATUR, México’s national trust for the promotion of tourism, as well as Plaza del Pescador, Rock & Brews, and over three dozen other area restaurants, hotels, shops, and businesses.
