ACE SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT WORKSHOP
AT THE HILTON LOS CABOS

liga-mac- workshop-86Many thanks go out from Liga MAC to the Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort for inviting Liga MAC ACE scholarship students to participate in Hilton Worldwide’s Community Service Week.

Sixteen female Liga MAC ACE scholarship junior high students from Secundaria Técnica 14 attended the workshop “Achieving your Goals” held at the hotel on October 9th.

At the workshop, a group of the hotel’s female executives shared their personal stories of success as hoteliers. The women placed emphasis on education, studying hard, self-discipline and following dreams. Core values, the importance of service to others and happiness were also discussed. Mónica Aguirre (Housekeeping Director), Adriana Tello (SPA Director), Lourdes Ramirez (Chef) and Laura Zárate (Quality Director), along with Brenda Figueroa, (Human Resources Director), Luisa Toledo, (Learning & Development Manager) and Sandra Bordenave, (Romance & Special Events Manager) shared their time and warmth with the students.

After the workshop the students toured the hotel and enjoyed a delicious, nutritious lunch provided by the Hotel. The Hilton Los Cabos Beach & Golf Resort also generously provided round-trip transportation for the students from the Centro de Apoyo in El Zacatal. Many thanks to everyone at Hilton Los Cabos!

ACE SCHOLARSHIP STUDENT REGISTRATION

liga-mac-scholarship-74For three consecutive Saturdays in June, Liga MAC volunteers, board members and staff assisted students at the Junior High School, High School and University levels to register for their ACE Scholarhips.

At Registration, 500 ACE (Adelante con la Educacion or Forward with Education) Scholarship Students received vouchers for the purchase of shoes, uniforms and tuition to continue education.

On Saturday June 22nd , representatives from the Hilton Los Cabos volunteered at the Centro de Apoyo to assist ACE Jr. High School students with the registration process. Hilton Los Cabos is the site of the Annual Liga MAC JazzFest where funds to continue the ACE Scholarship program are raised. The volunteers assisted to witness the full cycle of the ACE program, from fundraising to distribution. Many thanks go out to the Hilton volunteers who took their Saturday to help these dedicated students realize dreams.

Registration was followed on August 3rd with ACE Scholarship Backpack Day, where students received backpacks and required materials for the school year.   The enthusiasm these students have for continuing education is inspiring!

LIGA MAC’S DESPENSA (BASIC NEEDS) PROGRAM

liga-mac-dispensa-program-83One of Liga MAC’s three core programs, “despensa,” or Basic Needs is a program established to distribute food to families  facing extreme financial difficulty in San Jose del Cabo.

Twice monthly, families who have been interviewed and approved for the program come to the Liga MAC support center in El Zacatal to receive vouchers for food from local supermarkets. Approximately 50 families per month arrive at the Center on alternate Wednesdays to attend life skills lectures geared toward providing participants with the skills necessary to work toward self-sufficiency.

Families in Liga MAC’s Basic Needs program receive financial assistance for three months, are then reviewed, and most frequently rotate out of the program with new families replacing them.

In 2012 approximately 698 families were assisted in this program. Go to ligamac.org to find out how you can make a donation, of time, money or in-kind service to help keep Liga MAC’s Basic Needs program in place.

DIANA AT SCHOOL IN CANADA

diana-school-canada-liga-mac-82In 2012 Liga MAC’s ACE (Adelante con educación or forward with education) scholarship program assisted 482 students in San Jose del Cabo with scholarships for tuition, school supplies and uniforms. How does this assistance affect the lives of these students and how does that in turn affect the well-being of our community?

With no further assistance from Liga MAC, one ACE scholarship student, Diana, has now gone on to study abroad in Canada. Follow her adventures and the continued improvement of her English language skills on her blog, dianatschool.wordpress.com. Many congratulations to Diana and best wishes for happiness and success in this life changing adventure!
