September 28, 2013. Here are some details from Debra and Tony Thune … we went out on Bad Medicine with Chris Erickson and the Bad Medicine Sportfishing crew. We went out about 20 miles up the Pacific Coast and trolled for about two hours with no luck. We had just started to pull in the lines when BAM! fish on! My husband Tony THUNE jumped in the chair and started fighting. Only after the fish broke water did we see how big it was! It took out 350-400 yards of line very quickly. Fought about 40 minutes before it dove. Then it dove for about 2000 feet, nearly taking every bit of line off the reel. It was a tug-of-war trying to raise the fish. In fact, the pole broke after about two hours of fighting. We had to splice that line onto another reel…in the middle of the fight! At some point, the fish died at 2000 feet. It took a total of over four hours to get the fish on the boat. My husband Tony said it felt like he was trying to pull a school bus up from the bottom of the ocean.

Chris called a friend who owns the scales near La Casa Country and asked to use the scales. We brought the fish in, and everyone came out to watch and take pictures. It tipped the scales at 544 pounds. And it had a 17 pound fresh Dorado in its stomach! Tony and I made a connection through my Rotary Club with a local orphanage and we asked that our share of this huge fish be given to the orphanage.
