Where Land Ends and the Laughs Begin: Cabo Comedy Festival Debuts Next Month
For years, the biggest October events in Cabo San Lucas have been Bisbee’s Black and Blue, the world’s richest fishing tournament, and Sammy Hagar’s birthday, which draws some of the biggest names in rock to accompany the former Van Halen frontman in a series of celebratory performances at Cabo Wabo Cantina. This year, however, the two perennial autumn calendar headliners will have some stiff competition, at least in terms of mainstream media interest.
The inaugural Cabo Comedy Festival is scheduled for October 2-6, 2013, and the virgin voyage of what is expected to be a major annual event will feature performances from some of world’s top stand-up comedians, as well as ancillary events that include a rising talent competition, a celebrity roast, celebrity golf and poker tournaments to benefit a local children’s charity, panel discussions, parties, and a concluding awards ceremony.
“Cabo is already L.A.’s playground,” said festival creator and producer John Zaring. “And with its awesome weather, beautiful beaches and abundant nightlife, it is the perfect place for a festival that’s been built to both fill a void in the industry and be a premier destination for comedy fans.”
Zaring’s name may be familiar to some Cabeños thanks to his work promoting the Cabo Celebrity Golf Classic, Puerto Los Cabos World Cup, and Casa Dorada’s Barefoot Formal New Year’s Eve Gala. Names that will be familiar to virtually everyone are those of the numerous comedy legends slated to appear at the festival, which include Jon Lovitz, Kevin Pollak, Paula Poundstone, Paul Provenza, Sherri Shepherd, Bobby Slaton, and Robert Townsend.

Dance club Pink Kitty is one of four area nightspots that will host performances from stand-up comedians.
Comedic performances will be held primarily at four local nightclubs: Desperado’s, Hard Rock Cafe, Pink Kitty, and Cabo Wabo Cantina. Other local hotspots will also be part of the action, however, thanks to a series of “official” social events that are scheduled at Baja Brewing Company, Knotty, Baja Junkie, Mandala, and Bar Esquina. Festival guests will be billeted in style at top area accommodations providers like Casa Dorada Resort & Spa, Cabo Villas Resort, Wyndham Tesoro, Villa del Arco, Villa del Palmar, Cabo Lifestyle Villas, and Bahia Hotel.
The Cabo Comedy Festival is supported by both the Mexico and Los Cabos Tourism Boards. It has also received a vote of confidence from Baja California Sur’s Secretary of Tourism, Ruben Reachi, who said, “The Cabo Comedy Festival will shine the spotlight of the entertainment industry on Los Cabos and Baja California Sur, and bring fans from around the world here for the shows. On behalf of the Governor, we are excited to lend our support!”
