Pacific hurricane season starts early
The 2012 hurricane season got off to an early start Monday when the first tropical storm of the year was named.
Tropical Storm Aletta formed about 550 miles south-southwest of Acapulco, according to the National Hurricane Service. It continued to swirl over open waters in the eastern Pacific Ocean today about 810 miles south of Cabo San Lucas with maximum sustained winds of 45 mph with some higher gusts.
Forecasters predict the storm will continue to track due west and pose no threat to land.
The Pacific hurricane season officially began today and will conclude at the end of November.
