More than 350 attendees could not help but be in a New York state of mind at the ninth annual Dressed to the K9’s fundraiser on Saturday, December 13. From the moment the classy crowd made its way up the elevator to the Wyndham Resort’s all-new Vista Sky Pool Terrace overlooking the Cabo San Lucas Bay and marina, it was apparent New York had nothing on Cabo San Lucas. It was just like Grand Central Station. No need for a New York skyline, either; the beautiful Cabo San Lucas harbor with its fashionable yachts bobbing in the water below was a beautiful sight.

Ladies were gussied up for a night on the town. The gents did their best in their Cabo formal wear of shirttails worn out and long pants. A salute to those few true blue gentlemen who wore tuxedos and looked like they could have stepped out of a limousine in front of Carnegie Hall.

The “Night in New York”-inspired theme was professionally executed throughout the evening starting with a special bar sponsored by Carrie and Peter Walsh and manned by Dianne Mattie serving martinis and Cosmopolitans. Del Cabo Events donated the decorations in the VIP section, which included dazzling black sequined table coverings and a two-foot candelabra with crystals and mirrors and floral arrangements by Cabo Flowers. Those in the VIP section paid the price to be pampered and were served individual plates and champagne by Brian Solomon and Executive Chef Silvano Orozco of Solomon’s Landing. The buffet provided by Solomon’s Landing on the other side of the pool was nothing short of the Battery and the Bronx all rolled into one.

Mounting the grand stage provided by Edwin Teeven in front of the enormous swimming pool, master of ceremonies Robby Zolezzi welcomed everyone and kept the show moving along at a good pace with music provided by DJ Mario Maeve. During the cocktail hour, Luciano Pavan serenaded with his electric white violin. The music highlight of the evening was the live Best of Broadway Show directed by Marcie Castro, a pianist-vocalist who had everyone tapping their toes and singing along with such Broadway show tunes from My Fair Lady, Chorus Line, West Side Story, Cabaret and Cats, to name but a few.  “New York is everybody’s kind of town,” said Castro, “especially the Broadway shows. It was not what kind of music to present,” she said, “but what to leave out.”

Starting with an ensemble of Lullaby of Broadway and 42nd Street by Castro, several toe-tapping numbers followed by a duet with Kathy Daniels of Two for the Road Jazz Bar. A highlight feature was a performance by Jillian Gibbs, New York City native and trained classical singer-actor-dancer whose solos reached the high notes earning a big round of applause singing Memory from Cats. She and “Los Cabos’ Frank Sinatra,” Ernesto Ramirez Moreno, a production singer who can be heard at the Hyatt Ziva in San Jose del Cabo, brought the house down with their duet of the theme song from Phantom of the Opera. Lisa Monet performed a tribute to Tina Turner with the Carlos Limon backup dancers.

To give credit where credit is due, the event organizers were Marc Luc Poelvoorde of Marc Luc Studios, chairperson for the fourth year, who said they reached their financial goal, but that the exact figures aren’t in yet. Elizabeth Schoell of Sunset Weddings co-chaired the event. Other organizers were Aida Trujillo, President of the Los Cabos Humane Society, Margarita Partridge and Maye Cortinas. Sponsors included Susan Frazar, Gail Freels, Paul & Cynthia Rodgers, Varnita Hewitt, and Pam and Dave Fowler.

Donations for the Silent Auction were Suzanne Morel, A Matter of Taste, Linens, Things & More, Edith’s Restaurant, Ivan Guaderrama Gallery, Questro Group, Spa at Pedregal, Cabo Villas, The Resort at Pedregal, Eddie Feinstein, Hacienda Cocina & Cantina, Pez Gordo Gallery, Bruce Herman Gallery. Cabo Wabo, Enrique Morales, Peludogs, Blanca a la Playa, Cabo Unico Tequila, The Castle Cigars, George Schoell, Sue Murphy, Villa Group, Studio 24, Veterinaria Blanco y Negro, and Joe Bernolfo.

A VIP guest challenged Zolezzi to jump into the pool for $1,000 USD. Being the showman that he is, he saw this as an opportunity to raise needed funds. Those who took up the dare with him were Marc Poelvoorde, Liz Lawrence, Leann Harris, Modu Seye, Robby Zollezi, and Aida Trujillo. The result was a total of $20,000 raised to rebuild the storage shed at the humane society that was destroyed during Hurricane Odile.

All proceeds from ticket sales, discounted for Hurricane Relief, benefited the Los Cabos Humane Society. No doubt about it. Los Cabos’ most elegant affair was the cat’s meow.   Sandra A. Berry.
