Puerta Vieja Restaurant
Los Cabos Guide - Restaurant and Dining Review - October 25, 2006 - by Anna Urbanik
Ask any local where to go for some of the best viewsand foodin Cabo San Lucas, and they will inevitably point up toward elegant Puerta Vieja. Welcoming diners through an extraordinary 150-year old Indian door, this restaurant combines warm hacienda-style decor with Haute Mexican cuisine and spectacular ocean and Land’s End views.
We arrive early not to miss the spectacular panoramic sunset over town and across the bay.
To the sounds of romantic Spanish ballads performed by Puerta Vieja’s exclusive Juan Flores, we are welcomed with a pleasantly spicy amuse bouche of grilled nopales(cactus), pickled potatoes and mushrooms. Then, while sipping on fine Chardonnay and enjoying the spectacular view of El Arco (the arch) and the city getting ready for the Saturday night fever, a scrumptious guacamole is sent to our table by Chef Roberto Rendon.
I start with a fabulously combined pear salad with gorgonzola, prosciutto, and caramelized walnuts. The lobster chowder served in a bread crust bowl is an excellent starter for chilly winter nights. This being Cabo San Lucas, the menu is loaded with local fresh fish and seafood. Lobster and shrimp are ubiquitous at prices that are as pleasant as an early Christmas present.
Combos are available with Sonora Angus beef, like the Puerta Vieja Specialty, three lamb chops, three jumbo shrimps and a lobster tail, an unabashed bargain at $28 U.S. Other entrees are priced from $14 to $29U.S.
I go for the chef-recommended, off-the-menu tequila shrimp, set atop a smoked pineapple slice, accompanied by a creamy, mushroom-laden tequila saucesimply delicious. There’s also an array of Mexican specialties like Tampiqueña (marinated beef fillet) and traditional enchiladas.
Save room for dessert, because the key lime pie is worth every extra pound it will make you gain. The Double Chocolate Cheesecake, and the flan are to die for as well.
Puerta Vieja is great for lunch and dinner, but if you just want to drop by for a drink, there are two full bars, one downstairs and another on the rooftop terrace.
The spacious two-level building features indoor dining room with capacity for 150 people and an outside patio for 80. Two intimate VIP rooms are available with capacity for 8 and 12 people.
With great food, breathtaking views and warm, inviting atmosphere Puerta Vieja has it all. Located at Km 6.3 of the Transp. Hwy., near Plaza del Rey. For reservations, call (624) 104-3252.Anna Urbanik
