La Casa Country Restaurant Bar Los Cabos Guide - Restaurant and Dining Review - November 2005 - by Sandra Berry
La Casa Country is like a whole other country. It has a style all its own, influenced by cowboys and a frontier spirit. The character of the food is in the way the dishes are served. Take the guacamole, mixed tableside, rich and full of avocado flavor. Or the salsa, also prepared fresh at each table to the diners’ tastes. Salsa has replaced catsup in Mexico; it is used on everything! I lay claim to being a true Texan and my companion for the evening hails from Calgary, where cowboys, rodeos, and anything Country and Western is imbued in the soul. We started with the melted cheese with pepper strips, and moved on to our entree grazing our way through the meat platter for two consisting of goat, skirt steak, chicken, and ribs, then sampled the big shrimp combination, ending with flan and Mexican coffee, flamed at the table to the wide-eyed amazement of a youngster seated nearby. The Mexican food is authentic at Casa Country, having had its beginnings in Mazatlan in 1993, followed with the opening of its second location in Cabo in February 2004 by the four Veliz brothers. Traditional Mexican flavors are paired with wicked sauces, like their pride and joy chimichurri sauce and rightfully sothey make it on the premises. All cuts of steak are offered as a house specialty, served sizzling from the charcoal grill. Molcajete (a lava rock bowl) is their rendition of fajitas and is also a specialty dish served with a choice of beef, chicken, or shrimp. Reminiscent of a ranch house, with antlers hanging from the rafters, country music from the DJ, and waiters wearing white cowboy hats, who break into line dancing, we felt right at home. This is not intimate dining, but rather pure revelry. Entrees range from $10 U.S. to the meat platter for two at $45, to the American steaks (combination of all for $68). This is larruping’ good food and the service very entertaining. The air-conditioned restaurant seats 124 and goes the extra mile catering to parties of all ages, with a special children’s menu. Casual dress, jeans and boots are welcome. Valet parking available. Open from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. daily, La Casa Country is located in Plaza California on Lazaro Cardenas, across from McDonald’s in Cabo San Lucas. Call (624) 105-1999 for group reservations.S.B.
