Los Cabos Guide - Restaurant and Dining Review - August 17, 2006 - by Anna Urbanik

Tucked behind the historic church of colonial San Jose del Cabo, Jazmin’s offers traditional Mexican dishes as well as seafood and vegetarian specialties. Upon entering you will find yourself engulfed by the revolutionary spirit, as you lend your ear to the beat of banda and Mariachi music playing in the background. Decorating the ceiling papel picado (colorful cut tissue paper) is a cheerful reminder of local traditional festivities, and fills the room with a joyful vibe.

You’ll almost feel the glances of historical heroes when you get comfy in one of the lush alcoves and corners of colorfully decorated Jazmin’s. Picture-studded, pink, yellow and blue walls, serve as a photo gallery taking you back to XIX-century Mexico with memories of Pancho Villa and his fellow fearless comrades of the revolution.

The menu won’t disappoint you. Serving Los Cabos for the past 13 years, the Owner Araceli Villafuerte knows how to please her guests. The fabulous tuna- or shrimp-stuffed butter-soft avocado can get you started, and the rightfully recommended Jazmin’s Special (shrimp-stuffed tender chicken breast in Béchamel sauce) will get you going. Fresh from the net, there’s Meniere Fish, a delicious sea bass filet bathed in onion and cilantro sauce and topped with melted cheese.

Meat eaters will appreciate chicken in molcajete, fajitas and BBQ baby back ribs, whereas for traditional Mexican fare seekers there’s Viva Pancho Villa menu, featuring a large combo loaded with chile relleno, carne asada, tacos, rice, beans and guacamole. For the little ones there’re burritos, burgers, sandwiches or tacos, and vegetarians’ best bets are cheese enchiladas or chiles rellenos.

Jazmin’s also serves traditional Mexican breakfast and an ample selection of lunch entrees. Neighborhood, folksy atmosphere and reasonable prices, with appetizers ranging from $4 U.S. to $10 U.S. and entrees from $9 U.S. to $23 U.S., make this spot a great selection for your casual dining rendezvous.

Don’t overlook the details like the custom-made furniture, the bamboo bar or the well-stocked English library. The air-conditioned, pleasantly lit room with seating capacity for 50 and up to 100 for special events, has a unique inviting quality that will keep you coming back. Thanks to its central location, Jazmin’s offers more than just a meal. When your feast is over, stroll through the streets of the charming historic downtown and make it a part of your experience.
