El Comal de la Buena Comida Mexicana
Los Cabos Guide - Restaurant and Dining Review - July 27, 2006 - by Anna Urbanik

Away from the street racket and safeguarded within a blooming, lush backyard in the historic center of San Jose del Cabo, lies a jewel of truly Mexican cuisine, El Comal. This spot takes full advantage of Los Cabos’ year-round alfresco dining opportunities, with its large, candlelit patio, under a canopy of colorful bougainvilleas and scented fruit trees. The scene alone is enough to attract the ever-growing bevy of visitors as well as locals, and Chef Jose Amador keeps them coming back. The offerings of the house don’t veer much from the most traditional, prehispanic Mexican cooking. Try Sopes de Cochinita Pibil (soft corn dough filled with shredded pork loin, oven-roasted and marinated in axiote sauce). For an entrée choose between chef-recommended Carne Asada a la Tampiquena (marinated flank steak with poblano peppers) and out-of-the-ordinary Cabrilla Encostrada (tortilla-crusted sea bass filet with grilled tomatoes.) If you feel like “something light,” Oaxaca cheese salad is your best bet; for seafood lovers, jumbo shrimp with chili guajillo strips is not to be missed. All of the dishes are served with fabulous, flavored red, green and yellow tortillas, and should be served with one of the five dazzling margaritas. To tack on to your painstakingly Mexican experience, El Comal’s décor will astound you with details like hand-woven linen tablecloths and napkins from the southern region of Oaxaca, owner-designed, margarita glasses and plates as well as lamps and candles in all sizes and shapes. Plan on arriving at dusk, as when the night falls, this spot transforms itself into a celestial-like space of floating lights, setting the scene for an unforgettable romantic rendezvous. There’s also a mystic vibe to it, awakening nostalgic longing for the days passed.  Located in La Casa de Don Rodrigo, dating back to the1800s, El Comal has history lurking in every corner. The old almond tree, guarding over the courtyard, remembers Los Cabos’ virgin days; and these memories are the ones the Owner and Manager Raul Villavicencio strives to rescue, preserving as much as possible of the original architectural framework and décor. If you are planning an event, the restaurant organizes wedding rehearsals, birthday parties, etc. with capacity up to 80 people. Catering and chef services are also available. The service is prompt and attentive, helping to make your dining experience even more memorable. Open Mon-Sat 11 a.m.-3 p. m. and 6 p.m.-10 p.m. On Blvd. Mijares #1357, Downtown, San Jose del Cabo. Phone: 142-5508. – Anna Urbanik
