Calima Restaurant

Los Cabos Guide - Restaurant and Dining Review

April 30, 2007 - by Bradley Fraser.

Most of the restaurants I review are done so during dinner so when I was asked to do Calima Restaurant in the Playa Grande Resort, I knew this would be a daytime calling. Playa Grande is located on the peninsula of land, which separates the Pacific Ocean and the Sea of Cortez, otherwise known as Land’s End with the arch at the tip.

Calima Restaurant

Calima restaurant is right beside the terraced pool area inside and catches some great cooling breezes from the Pacific from about noon on.

Calima is mostly an open-air restaurant/bar with palapa and pergola shade areas at pool’s edge. There is a small bar area with a television and a sushi bar with a cluster of high tables. The menu is perfect poolside repast, which is served at the dining tables and to the lounge chairs around the pool. Certain items are marked PF or pool friendly.

Appetizers include Shrimp Cocktail ($10), Nachos with Beef ($12) or a Caesar Salad for two ($15). For lunch entrees you may want to try the classic Hamburger ($10) Veggie Burger made from a portabella mushroom ($10) or the poolside favorite Club Sandwich ($12). Other lunch entrees include Beef and Shrimp Kabob ($25), Battered Shrimp Tacos ($12), Carne Asada Tacos ($12) or Quesadillas with Shrimp ($11). If you are feeling like sushi for lunch, Calima has assorted Sashimi, Temaki, Unomakis and Tempuras made fresh just after ordering and come in around $10-13.

Open until 8 p.m. the dinner menu ‘the Grill’ offers many and varied surf and turf combos for around $25. Calima is a great place to bring the family and the Kids Menu reflects this. Among other choices the kids can order a Hot Dog ($3.50) or Mac and Cheese ($5) with a Milkshake ($3.50) in any of the three stand-by flavors; vanilla, chocolate or strawberry. You and your kids might want to share a Banana Split ($5) for dessert.

While I was there for a late lunch I heard the clanging of bells around 3:30 p.m. and a collective YAHOO from most of the tables around me. A possible whale sighting? A pool volleyball win? A round of nachos for all? Nope, even better, it was the bell to signal the beginning of Happy Hour, which really lasts longer than an hour, but you will need to go to Calima to know exactly how long!
