Parroquia de San Lucas Evangelista Catholic Church – Iglesia
Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico
The popular downtown Cabo San Lucas Catholic Church is Parroquia de San Lucas Evangelista (Parish church of Saint Luke, the Evangelist), It is is the main Catholic Church in Cabo San Lucas area for bi-lingual masses at 12 noon each Sunday.
This church was constructed in 1730 by a Spanish missionary. Renovations have been done over the years but the structure is rather simple. It is a tribute to the local history because little has changed in its appearance since the original construction. There is no air conditioning, only ceiling fans for cooling. It can be quite warm in the summer.
The nearby town square, Plaza Amelia Wilkes has a picturesque gazebo and is used for festivals and events. On Palm Sunday the congregation goes to the plaza where the priest says a prayer and bless the palm fronds of the parishioners.
If you want to get an excellent sense of the local culture, you might take time to visit here and mingle with the parishioners. It is located across the street and one block from the town square (Plaza Amelia Wilkes) near Mi Casa Restaurant about two blocks from Boulevard de la Marina.
Editors note 2013: We had previously stated, erroneously , that the Santuario de Guadalupe was also known as the Iglesia Católica de San Lucas (Cabo San Lucas Catholic Church). This is not correct. Santuario de Guadalupe is another Cabo San Lucas church (templo) and was consecrated on January 21, 1991 in honor of Our Lady of Guadalupe by the Honorable Bishop Dr. Don Rafael Leon Villegas. The Feast of the Virgin of Guadalupe is celebrated on December 12th at Santuario de Guadalupe with masses, fairs, parades, fireworks, etc. Visit this link, Santuario de Guadalupe, for more details and photos.
