Mi Casa de Mariscos Restaurant Review by David Mandich - December 11, 2003
An old wooden stagecoach is seemingly abandoned near the entrance of this colonial styled restaurant. Upon entering Mi Casa del Marisco Restaurant one is immediately flanked on both sides by doorways beckoning you to divert into a jewelry and art shop on the left or a Mexican crafts shop on the right. I was not able to pass through to the restaurant without enjoying a fun quick look at both places before my growling stomach reminded me what I came for.
I had to pause in the restaurant lobby to re-orient myself before following the waiter to our table. For to enter this place is to enter a maze of pastel colored columned arched vaults, around and beneath a two story open-air dining salon. It had to be some architect's fantasy and poor contractor's nightmare to build it.
Within the many covered alcoves surrounding the central open air dining area are a fresh seafood bar, a salad prep bar, mesquite grill and tortilla bar, a bar for drinkers and a large shrine alcove replete with a score of cruces, statuary and large colonial era styled religious paintings. The total effect of the establishment is one of a colonial French style mansion as often found in Guadalajara or Mexico City. And with soft lighting about and the stars above, it was enchanting the night we dined there.
The service was excellent as is typical of the Peacocks restaurant group, which trains its staff in professional customer service. As many as two or three waiters, all overseen by a Captain, may attend each table. Here you may find enough staff present to get the job done and often done right.
How many times have you waited and waited for a glass of water or a check that seemed to never arrive. Well, the check eventually makes it to you at most places ? but here, ask for anything and it is there pronto! You may get a Garden Salad as I did, instead of the Shrimp Salad as I ordered, but it was there and pronto. After the mistake was noted (and with muchas apologies) it was exchanged for the right salad... pronto!
My Mexicana esposa ordered El Caldo de Camaron Cantinero (Shrimp soup). I fear she is becoming a Gringa for though it was tantalizing, it was almost too spicy for her. I tasted it and found it quite lively and good, but my taste buds continued to discuss it for a while after. My Ensalada de Mariscos con vinagreta Tropical was a mixed seafood salad in an herbal anchovy pineapple vinaigrette. The seafood was fresh, abundant and the sauce just right being not too sweet or sour.
Be careful, entrée portions are Texas Gringo size here. One order is often enough fare for two folks. I ordered the specialty of the house from the Mesquite Grill: Huachinango a la Talla o Frotado en Achiote. This regional seafood specialty is Red Snapper flayed in two halves, delicately seasoned with Chile Ancho, lime & mayonnaise and seared over the wood fire grill. This dish is presented on an almost turkey platter sized oblong plate accompanied by a large portion of grilled veggies including yellow, red and green Bell Pepper, Squash, Cauliflower, slices of potato, and more.
Understand, I am not a veggie kind of guy, but the seasoning and grilling of this produce was enough to make me "eat all my vegetables". Mother would have been proud. My wife was mystified. And in typical Mexicana fashion asked why I never ate "Her" vegetables at home? What could I say to save my marriage but: "my fault honey, if I'd bought you that five thousand dollar, stainless steel commercial stove with a grill in the middle like you saw in that architects magazine feature on kitchens of the Hollywood stars, you could grill them greens like that everyday too..." Whew, it was a close one.
My bride of three years ordered Los Camarones Endiablados for $220 pesos. Out of the kitchen came another large platter loaded with large prawns and a colorful array of grilled veggies. There were even enough prawns for her to share a couple with me, such was the bounty. It was nice to not have to get down on my knees and beg her for a change.
After being stuffed like a couple of burritos we barely had space for a postre. But knowing my editor would criticize me for not doing my job if I didn't, I ordered a slice of triple chocolate mousse cake to share with mi espousa. It didn?t disappoint in the least being a sumptuous chocolate cake separated by more chocolate filling and topped with even more chocolate frosting. But the one slice was too much for the both of us, so we brought half home, which my wife promptly forgot about.
Leftovers in our frig seem to remain there until they literally crawl out on their own, don clothes, and pose as children. I sneaked the cake slice for breakfast with my coffee the next morning. Before the wife or the kids got it. Am I just doing my job or what?
