Contemporary, Traditional and Primitive Art By The Finest Artists in Baja California Sur, including Dennis Wentworth Porter, David Mandich, ACM, Mandich the Younger, Fernando Tames & Antonio Viveros.

Five years ago, West Coast Artist David Mandich arrived in BCS having left San Diego for a trip around the world on his sailboat with his then nineteen-year-old son Alex. Arriving in La Paz six weeks later, Alex jumped ship, swam ashore, boarded a bus to San Diego complaining about the abundance of hot weather, lack of surf and absence of California girls.

Little did son Alex realize, world-class surf was only fifty miles west near Todos Santos (as was cooler weather) and the guy / girl ratio in La Paz is seven to one in favor of the guys. Seems all the local caballeros go to Mexico for college and come back with wives or go south to Cabo San Lucas to work in the job rich resort town. The La Paz ladies are left sad and lonely, dancing with each other in the nightclubs.

Two years went by and ‘Pudd’n-head’ Alex rejoined his father in Baja, who (during the kids absence) had fallen asleep in a dentistas chair in La Paz and ended up married. "Alex, meet your new mother" Said his Dad, introducing him to la Doctora Rosa Elena Pena Madero, the great granddaughter of former Mexican President Francisco Madero, Mexico’s first president following the revolution of 1910.

Dra. Rosy turned out to be a great dentist, the first Woman President of the Baja Dental Association and now sailor, and painters model as well. She owns the Angels Touch Dental Clinics and is known throughout Baja Sur as the "Dentist With The Touch Of An Angel."

Artist David Mandich (The Elder) paints Latin themes such as Don Quixote and fierce Aztec images in rich tapestry or Oriental carpet like layouts with layers of gold leaf and glazes. He has been painting thirty-five years and is a graduate of Disney’s
School -California Institute of the Arts. Disney and his early animators learned to draw there in the 1930’s and subsequently underwrote the school for decades.

Alex, (Mandich the Younger), was soon presented with a choice of earning a living by either holding an artists paint brush or his mother’s dental suction tube. He opted to study painting under his father. He turned out to be a fearless natural, creating innovative figurative paintings of himself, surfers, break-dancers and portraits of his new Mexican novia (girlfriend).

Both artists paint from the heart, and art buyers and critics alike have taken notice. Mandich the Elder has shown in American Museums such as the Portland Art Museum and has been collected by companies ranging from Twentieth Century Fox, Motown Records, VW and Ferrari. Mandich the Younger, just beginning his artistic career last year, has already shown in three galleries and had his first Mexican government sponsored show this year.

This past October 2003, both Mandich’s were honored at being invited by the State of Baja California Sur to have a father / son artist exposition at the State Cultural Center in La Paz. They may be the first Americans to be so recognized. You can find their oils, acrylic paintings, watercolors and drawings at the La Coronela Gallery a block down Legaspi Street from the main ‘Cathedral plaza.
