Saturday night was the welcomed finish line for the 120 teams that had fished their hearts out during Cabo’s Black & Blue Tournament.
The sleepless nights, questions about where to go, what to do – troll live bait or lures and what kind of either to use? – all had dominated the past three days.
Then, there were the woulda’-coulda’-shoulda’ moments that plagued almost everyone from the best and the brightest to the first-timers who were trying to get their heads around the BIG FISH/BIG MONEY tournament game that draws anglers like a moth to a flame.
Now that was behind them; in front of them was a night on the Cruise Ship Pier in the center of IGY Marina. Baja Cantina’s wait staff and chefs had spent most of the day preparing for the gala affair that included dinner beneath a perfect Los Cabos star-filled sky at a venue covered by a sea of white tables.
The evening promised to be as fast-paced as the tournament itself with many moving parts … from fresh sushi to lavish dessert trays.
Following a charity auction and raffle conducted by Andy Dunning, Dallas Car Sharks show benefiting the Bisbee Green Scholarship Fund, some of the children who would be recipients of the funds were introduced to the audience.
Tournament Director Wayne Bisbee then presented the cash, trophies and plaque awards for all of the 2017 Black and Blue winners.
“One hundred twenty teams with 807 anglers accounted for 14 black marlin, 54 blue marlin, 10 striped marlin, and 1 sailfish for a total of 78 fish with a hookup conversion 88%,” Bisbee began at the awards portion of the evening.
He continued, “All of the fish brought to the scales, regardless of whether they were qualifiers or not, were donated to Hope for Los Cabos . Jen Limpert, representing Hope for Los Cabos, reported that the catch amounted to 11,249 pounds or 33,747 meals which would feed those in need. Many went to the Los Cabos Kids kitchens while others were delivered to the needy people in the barrios. It is so great that those fish help so many in great need!”
Bisbee announced that this year’s tournament was responsible for the largest number of qualifying fish in its history before he concluded the tournament by awarding the checks to the winners.

After the overall winning team, Chupacabra, received their award, the sky was ablaze over the IGY Marina with fireworks celebrating the final night of the richest fishing tournament on the planet as Queen’s “We are the Champions” echoed off the fleet of sportfishers in the marina.
Entertainers during the gala celebration included David Pack’s Legends Live who took the stage and rocked the house for several hours featuring: Gary Wright, singing Dream Weaver and Love is Alive; John Elefante, former lead singer of Kansas; Wally Palmar, lead singer of the Romantics; Jim Peterik, founder/singer of Ides of March and also formerly of Survivor, and .38 Special; Dave Jenkins, lead singer of Pablo Cruise and Pack, former lead vocalist of Ambrosia.
Jc Sportfishing Charters is a family owned and operated business and has been fishing in Cabo San Lucas for the past 18 years. Jerry, explains that his charter business is geared more for families and novice anglers, making sure everyone who charters a boat with him have a great time and lots of fun. We welcome families, and groups. We want everyone who fishes with us to take all the sites in and have a memorable experience. This is what is most important to us. We have and do a few tournaments each year and can cater to fisherman who might be interested in tournament fishing. Well lets get on with the fishing report for this past week.
WEATHER: Really nice weather over the last week. Highs in the mid 80,s and lows in the mid 60,s to low 70,s. It is hard to beat this weather considering the very how summer we had this year. It has been really hot all year and haven’t had much of winter over the last 2 years.
WATER: WELL THE WATER HAS BEEN COOLING DOWN SOME AND WE EXPECT IT TO CONTINUE TO COOL OVER THE NEXT FEW DAYS. IT HAS HAD A EFFECT ON THE FISHING IT SEEMS WHEN THE WATER COOLS SOME WE ARE SEEING MORE ACTION.
PLEASE CHECK OUT THE TEMPBREAK MAP LINK BELOW TO GET A GOOD IDEA ON WATER TEMPERATURES. http://www.tempbreak.com/index.php?&cwregion=cb
BILLFISH: THE STRIPED MARLIN AND SAILFISH FISHING HAVE BEEN JUST SO SO ALL WEEK. IT HAS BEEN PRETTY CONSISTENT FOR THE LAST MONTH ON THESE 2 SPECIES SO WE REALLY CANT COMPLAIN. MOST CHARTERS WILL HOOK INTO SOME TYPE OF BILLFISH. IF YOU GO UP AROUND THE LIGHT HOUSE AND HEAD TOWARD THE MARGARITA AREA, ABOUT 2 MILES OFFSHORE, YOU WILL RUN INTO SOME SAILFISH AND STRIPED MARLIN. WE HAD LOTS OF LUCK USING LURES AND LIVE BAIT THERE.
DORADO: THE DORADO FISHING HAS BEEN SLOWER THIS WEEK AND ABOUT 150 MILES NORTH OF US, UP AROUND MAG BAY THEY HAVE BEEN HAVING A DORADO BITE OFF THE HOOK. WE ARE HOPING IT GETS BETTER HERE IN CABO WITH THE COOLING WATER TEMPERATURES BUT WE SURE DON’T NEED ANY OF THAT GREEN ALGE BLOOM WHICH WILL REALLY SLOWS THE BITE DOWN. I AM THINKING THAT THIS WARM WATER WE HAVE IN THE AREA IS JUST TOO MUCH FOR THEM AND THEY ARE STAYING AWAY. WE HAVEN’T SEEN REALLY TOO MUCH GOOD DORADO ACTION ALL YEAR AS IT HAS BEEN PRETTY MUCH HIT AND MISS.
SWORDFISH: Hasn’t heard of any caught this week.
WAHOO: The Wahoo fishing has slowed over the past week with really not the numbers we were seeing but still ok.
TUNA: WE WOULD LIKE TO ASK MEXICO A QUESTION AS TO WHY THIS IS ALLOWED TO HAPPEN? AND WHERE IS THE LINE DRAWN AS TO COMMERCIAL FISHING IN SOME OF THE RICHEST FISHING GROUNDS IN ALL OF MEXICO, AND FOR THAT MATTER ALL THE WORLD. WE ARE ASKING EVERYONE THROUGH FACEBOOK, WHATS UP OR ANY SOCIAL PLATFORM YOU CAN USE TO GET THE WORD OUT ABOUT THE INJUSTICE OF COMMERCIAL FISHING BOATS BASICALLY RAPING THIS AREA OF FISH, AND ANY OTHER TYPE OF SEA LIFE THAT GETS WRAPPED IN THEIR FISHING NETS. THIS SHOULD NOT ONLY APPLY TO THIS AREA, BUT ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD WHERE COMMERCIAL FISHING AND GOVERNMENT ARE WORKING TOGETHER TO MAKE NOTHING BUT MONEY $$$ FROM THE SEA. SO WE ARE ASKING EVERYONE TO SPEAK UP ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND DO AND TALK TO WHO YOU CAN TO STOP THESE PRACTICES.
INSHORE: MOSTLY SOME SMALL DORADO AND SOME SAILFISH CLOSE TO SHORE WITH IN A MILE OF THE BEACH IN SOME AREAS.
IT MIGHT BE WORTH GRABBING A PANGA AND GOING OUT FOR A 5 HOUR EXCURSION TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS INSHORE.

BEWARE: PLEASE BEWARE OF THE GUYS IN THE STREET SELLING BOAT CHARTERS. IF YOU WAIT TILL THE DAY YOU ARE FISHING AND GO TO THE DOCK WHERE YOUR BOAT IS MANY TIMES PEOPLE WILL MISLEAD YOU TO ANOTHER BOAT OR DOCK TRYING TO PUT YOU ON A BOAT THAT WAS NOT MEANT FOR YOU. YOU NEED TO HAVE A PERSON GUIDE YOU TO YOUR BOAT, WHO IS FROM A REPUTABLE CHARTER COMPANY. THIS WAY THERE IS NO CONFUSION OR MISLEADING. PLEASE REMEMBER WHEN RENTING SPORT FISHING BOATS IN CABO THAT YOU RENT YOUR BOAT FROM REPUTABLE AND ESTABLISHED BUSINESS. WALK INTO A FISHING FLEET OFFICE AND ASK QUESTIONS ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE GETTING AND WHAT ARE THE COSTS? YOU DON’T WANT TO RENT BOATS FROM VENDORS IN THE STREETS AND YOU DO NOT WANT TO BOOK THROUGH SHADY WEBSITES OFFERING YOU THE WORLD. CHECK THROUGH TRAVEL FORUMS ABOUT REPUTABLE FISHING FLEETS TO DEAL WITH. LOOK FOR TESTIMONIALS ABOUT THE FLEET YOUR BOOKING, YOUR CHARTER WITH. ASK
ABOUT WHAT WILL THE BOAT BE SUPPLYING? WILL IT INCLUDE BEVERAGES OR LUNCHES? HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO FILLET YOUR CATCH? CHECK TO SEE IF CHARTER BOAT IS INSURED? ASK ABOUT GETTING YOUR CATCH SMOKED? CHECK COST OF A FISHING LICENSE. THESE ARE JUST A FEW THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN BOOKING YOUR CHARTER BOAT. WE WILL BE TALKING MORE ABOUT THIS IN THE NEXT WEEKS FISHING REPORT. UNTIL NEXT TIME GOOD FISHING AND WE HOPE TO SEE YOU IN CABO SOON. COME BY THE OFFICE HERE IN CABO AND GET ALL THE LATEST UP TO DATE FISHING REPORT. WWW.JCSPORTFISHING.COM YOUTU.BE/TSXN6PIFQYQ
