GE is heating up the world of refrigerators with a hot water dispenser available on its new line of Café™ French door models.

The 29-cubic-foot GE Café French door refrigerator, available now, is the first refrigerator in the industry that can heat 10 ounces of water in minutes—ideal for steeping delicate, white tea or preparing warm, filtered water for baby formula.

A custom setting allows the consumer to select a temperature from 90 to 185 degrees Fahrenheit, or select one of four pre-programmed settings, which include 90 degrees for warm, 150 degrees for cocoa, 170 degrees for tea, and 185 degrees for soup. With the Café’s hot water dispenser, consumers can be assured they are quickly getting an accurate temperature for their filtered water.

Using the microwave or stove won’t give consumers a precise temperature. “It’s a total guessing game,” said Rob Lewis, lead design engineer for GE Appliances. “With the GE Café’s hot water dispenser, there’s confidence in getting an accurate temperature every time.”

Some like it hot

After studying how consumers interact with their refrigerators and kitchens, research revealed many use hot water daily. Some of the most common usages include preparing a cup of oatmeal, making tea, or fixing hot chocolate. With the custom and pre-programmed settings, consumers can select the perfect temperature for whatever they crave.

“The custom setting is especially interesting for tea aficionados who can make the most of their tea experiences,” said Lewis. “Simply adjust the temperature to enhance the natural flavor of tea.”

Engineering an oxymoron

Adding hot water to the refrigerator was a design challenge that GE’s ice and water engineering team tackled head on. The team figured out how to keep the interior temperatures at the ideal settings while restricting the energy consumption to achieve ENERGY STAR® status.

From there, GE’s engineers created a W-shaped heating element that uses a tube to feed the coldest water from the bottom while pushing the hottest water out from the top. Once the nature of the design began firming up, the team delved into consistency and reliability. They employed two thermometers to confirm accurate temperatures and verified the unit could not dispense boiling water. To use the hot water dispenser, a consumer must push in the dedicated knob and turn it counterclockwise.

The high-tech design of the hot water dispenser is patent pending. “The hot water dispenser will be a feature that once consumers have it, they’ll never want to live without it,” said John Boyd, marketing manager for refrigeration for GE Appliances.

Cleaner water, better food storage

In addition to hot water, the Café French door refrigerator offers a variety of additional features designed to optimize the enjoyment of food and beverages:

Pharmaceutical Filter: All of the new GE French door refrigerators feature the most advanced water filtration system in the industry. The system has been tested and certified by an independent third party to remove 98 percent of five trace pharmaceuticals, such as ibuprofen (a painkiller) and progesterone (a hormone).* In addition, the filter is located in the door for easy replacement, while also freeing up valuable space in the refrigerator.

Temperature-Controlled Drawer: A full-width, adjustable temperature-controlled drawer helps consumers store specific meat, beverage, produce, cheese and citrus foods at optimal storage temperatures, from 32 to 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Colored LED lights in the drawer—red, green, blue, aqua and purple—are visual cues of the temperature chosen.

Odor Filter: A new odor filter is designed to allow the consumer—at the touch of a button—to reduce unwanted odors within the fresh food section.

TwinChill™ Evaporators: The French door refrigerators also feature TwinChill™ evaporators, which separate airflow and climates in the fresh food and freezer sections to help maintain temperature and humidity levels to keep foods fresh. The separation of the air limits the amount of humidity in the freezer, reducing freezer burn while keeping freezer odors from mixing with refrigerator odors.

Convenient Storage Features: For optimal storage, the refrigerators feature a drop-down egg tray, door storage for gallon-sized products and adjustable shelves. The freezer features three freezer baskets and a space-saving icemaker in the door that frees up room in the refrigerator.

Let Me Count The Waves: New GE Dishwasher Has 102 Cleaning Jets to Thoroughly Clean Your Dishes.

The new GE Profile™ Series dishwasher with a stainless steel interior features 54 percent more cleaning jets than any other dishwasher in the industry. Does that mean dishes get cleaner? We think so; GE is pursuing nine patents around its innovative dishwasher design.

“When it comes to dishwashers, people are pretty straightforward – the cleaner the dishwasher gets their dishes, the easier their lives become,” says Dan Goldstein, marketing manager for GE dishwashers.

Wash arm deserves high-five for approach to clean
For a thorough soaking, the dishwasher not only contains 102 water entry points—colored blue on the product, it also has a reversible quad-blade wash arm for extra coverage. The reversing wash arm is uniquely designed to spray water in various velocities. With varying pressure, the water sprays at 100 percent force for some spins, but the next spin could spray at 60 percent. The variation means different areas on the dishes are hit with water.

As part of the 102 cleaning jet wash system, new side jets now cascade fresh water toward the center of the dishwasher to add extra attention to the silverware basket, in addition to other key spaces. Spoons slathered with peanut butter will come out shiny thanks to the combination of the side jets and dedicated silverware jets on the lower and middle wash arms.

Extra clean for hard-to-reach spaces
Hold onto your bottles and travel mugs, because this dishwasher has another new and industry-first feature—bottle wash jets. New, dedicated jets—a total of 16—have been integrated into the top rack to clean the bottom of a tall travel mug or dried milk from a baby bottle.

1. Quiet: At 42 DBA, the dishwasher is incredibly quiet.
2. Custom look: The dishwasher door installs flush with cabinetry.
3. Leveling: An adjustment screw in the front will raise or lower the rear wheels for easy leveling.

Most consumers have more of an emotional attachment to their range than their dishwasher or refrigerator.^* “The range is the hub of the kitchen,” said Heather Koyama, product manager for GE Appliances. GE is giving consumers more to love in the kitchen by expanding its cooking lineup to include the first and only slide-in double oven gas range in the industry.

“A slide-in range with its built-in custom look gives your kitchen a more seamless appearance,” said Koyama. As an added benefit, the slide-in makes for easy cleanup, thanks to the absence of crevices between the cabinets and countertops.

Double oven pulls double duty
Consumers have gotten hooked on the double oven, since two items can be cooked at different temperatures at one time. The GE model provides this benefit, along with the largest slide-in capacity at 6.8 cu ft. Frequently, however, consumers cook meals in only the top oven. The smaller space requires less time for pre-heating and is popular for baking everyday dishes such as a casserole, pizza or single sheet of cookies—especially on busy weeknights.

Enhancing the oven’s profile is an exclusive double broiler system. Previously, ovens had one broiler, or heating element, that browns from above and runs down the oven’s center. With the double broiler, two heating elements run along the top of the cavity for even cooking. “This is the only oven in the industry with a double broiler, which will make that entire dish of chicken irresistible,” said Koyama.

Other features include:

• An integrated griddle simplifies frying hamburgers and preparing pancakes. The griddle fits perfectly on the top of the range and can be cleaned with hot water.
• Continuous grates make it easy to slide pans.
• A tri-ring, 20,000-BTU burner furthers the slide-in’s flexibility, allowing you to slowly melt a small saucepan of chocolate or quickly boil a large pot of water for spaghetti.
