Sometimes, it’s in the form of earnest, but amateurish, efforts by local artists. Other times, it’s nothing more than a collection of velvet Elvis paintings in a cheesy tourist trap.

Not here.

All it takes is one visit to the weekly San Jose del Cabo Art Walk and you’ll understand.

As you stroll through the galleries along Calle Obregon behind the Mision de San Jose del Cabo church or those scattered along the edges of the downtown plaza, you will find yourself among the work of world-class artists – some known, some who are on their way to becoming known.

The Art Walk started in 2001 when less than a handful of artists thought it would be a good idea to work together to draw tourists to their galleries. They started by publishing a little pamphlet describing themselves and their galleries. It grew slowly, but today, there are more than 20 galleries. On a good night, nearly 1,000 people – locals and tourists – hit the streets and wander from gallery to gallery, soaking up the beauty.

If nothing more, it’s a great evening out. Stop for dinner at one of the downtown restaurants, stop in at a couple of shops that offer tequila tasting, and marvel at the creativity that surrounds you.

Artist Ivan Guaderrama shows one of his paintings to gallery visitors during the San Jose del Cabo Art Walk. He was raised there, attended the Art Institute of Colorado, then opened his first gallery, Criticas de Arte Galeria, in Chihuahua in 2007. He came to San Jose del Cabo on vacation two years ago, fell in love with the town, and stayed. He rapidly gathered a following and his work can be seen in not only his own gallery, but others throughout Los Cabos. He recently opened a gallery in upscale Laguna Beach, Calif.

He’s a passionate young man, an intelligent young man, a tender young man whose work reflects his soul. There are beautiful hearts, angels, and musical instruments that are resurrected from the trash heap and transformed into modern-day works of art. He mixes his own colors, creates his own paints, and works in mediums from rugged sculptures to gentle brush strokes.

There are times when my wife and I do the Art Walk simply to visit with Ivan and see where his muse is leading him.

We’ve never been disappointed.

The Art Walk continues through the end of May, each Thursday from 5-9 p.m. There is no admission charge.

It’s a thing of beauty, so make it a point to get out and do the walk.

Besides, a little exercise, whether it’s for the mind or body, never hurt anyone.

Ed Kociela is a writer for Los Cabos Magazine.
