{"id":8785,"date":"2015-11-05T14:20:36","date_gmt":"2015-11-05T21:20:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/?p=8785"},"modified":"2015-11-05T14:20:36","modified_gmt":"2015-11-05T21:20:36","slug":"preview-of-the-4th-annual-los-cabos-international-film-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/2015\/11\/preview-of-the-4th-annual-los-cabos-international-film-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Preview of the 4th Annual Los Cabos International Film Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/lights-camera-action-baja-international-film-festival-to-return-in-november\/\" target=\"_blank\">Los Cabos International Film Festival<\/a> returns next week, Nov. 11\u201315, with a slate of exciting new films, red carpet galas with movie stars and celebrities, and industry activities designed to promote collaboration between the Mexican, U.S, and Canadian film communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The program for the fourth edition of the popular event includes 45 films, many of which were outstanding features at some of the world\u2019s other notable festivals\u2013including Cannes, Sundance, Venice, Berlin, Telluride, and Toronto\u2013but few of which have ever been seen in M\u00e9xico. Thus, in addition to showcasing four world premieres, this year\u2019s program will also boast 11 Latin American and 19 Mexican premieres.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8788\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/LCIFFCdP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8788\" class=\"wp-image-8788\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/LCIFFCdP.jpg\" alt=\"LCIFFCdP\" width=\"350\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/LCIFFCdP.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/LCIFFCdP-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8788\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The program for the latest edition of the Los Cabos International Film Festival was unveiled by festival director Alonso Aguilar-Castillo during a recent press conference at Playa Grande in Cabo San Lucas.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Films will primarily be screened at Cinemex Theaters at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/puertoparaiso\/\" target=\"_blank\">Puerto Para\u00edso<\/a>, and at the Pabell\u00f3n Cultural de la Rep\u00fablica in <a href=\"http:\/\/loscabosguide.com\/cabosanlucas\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cabo San Lucas<\/a>, but there will also be outdoor screenings at Plaza Mijares in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/sanjosedelcabo\/\" target=\"_blank\">San Jos\u00e9 del Cabo<\/a>. \u00a0The outdoor screenings have been an enormous success locally since the inaugural event in 2012, when filmgoers sat under the stars, surrounded by succulents, watching <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hecho en M\u00e9xico<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the Wirikuta Cactus Garden at Puerto Los Cabos.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Local and national themes have always been popular, so the world premiere of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baja Taste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a film about Baja Med and the Baja California culinary scene, is particularly noteworthy. The Roberto Najera directed feature will be screened at Plaza Mijares on Nov. 15, and will almost certainly be one of the highlights of the weekend (hint: get there early). The outdoor screenings are free to the public thanks to sponsorship from Discovery Channel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baja Taste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is but one of the films in the festival\u2019s highly anticipated Tastes Program, a subgenre dedicated to gustatory cinema (think <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Big Night<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cook, The Thief, His Wife and Her Lover<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u00a0Other cinematic servings include the Mexican premiere of the Luiz Gonz\u00e1lez and Andrea G\u00f3mez joint <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooking up a Tribute<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about two brothers closing their acclaimed restaurant, El Celler de Can Roca, to take their talents on the road; and the Latin American premiere of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sergio Herman: F***ing Perfect<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, about a Michelin rated chef obsessed with culinary excellence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lest one think the gastronomic pleasures are limited to the silver screen, CPTM, M\u00e9xico\u2019s Tourism Board, will dine on traditional Mexican specialties at Cabo San Lucas restaurant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/lostresgallos\/\" target=\"_blank\">Los Tres Gallos<\/a>. And <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/pitahayas\/\" target=\"_blank\">Pitahayas<\/a>, the signature restaurant at Sheraton\u2019s elegant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/sheraton\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hacienda del Mar<\/a> resort, will host a very special dinner to celebrate and promote the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund. Miguel \u00c1ngel Guerrero, the Tijuana restaurateur who created Baja Med cuisine and is a major figure in the film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baja Taste<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, will work with Pitahayas own ace chef, Volker Romeike, to prepare dishes that allude to film fund awarded projects. Tickets are still available.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As some dude named Shakespeare once said: \u201cIf music be the food of love, play on.\u201d And music, like food, is highlighted at this year festival. Cuts from the B-Side Program include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dope<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a coming of age comedy for the Hip Hop generation that features original music from Pharrell Williams; a behind the scenes look at the hugely popular Canadian indie band Arcade Fire\u2013<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arcade Fire, The Reflektor Tapes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Office<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Hong Kong director Johnny To\u2019s ambitious musical comedy about corporate politics and workplace relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A new feature this year, Spotlight, shines on Alex Ross Perry, the young American director of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impolex <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2009), <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Color Wheel <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(2011), \u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Listen Up Phillip,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Queen of Earth (2015). <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The latter will make its Latin American premiere in Los Cabos. Bigger budget U.S. films are also represented\u2013in the section American Specials\u2013highlighted by Johnny Depp\u2019s portrayal of Boston gangster Whitey Bulger in <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Black Mass<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. International entries include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">45 Years<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Tom Courtenay and Charlotte Rampling, while entrants in the competition categories vie for cash prizs, as determined by distinguished juries of international film experts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opening night film will be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Demolition<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Jean-Marc Vall\u00e9e directed drama (loyal festival goers will remember that his film <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dallas Buyers Club<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also made its Mexican premiere in Los Cabos) starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts, and Chris Cooper. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taken<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nell<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> star Liam Neeson will be among the more recognizable attendees\u2026to U.S. and Canadian fans, anyway. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Choyeros <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">will likely be more impressed by the presence of national celebrities like Eugenio Derbez, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Yazpik, Manolo Caro, Tenoch Huerta, Jos\u00e9 Carlos Ru\u00edz, Sebasti\u00e1n Aguirre, Sophie Alexander-Katz, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda Torre, Sof\u00eda Espinosa, Ianis Guerrero, Rosa Mar\u00eda Bianchi, Jaime Garza, and Adriana Paz \u2013 all of whom will walk the red carpet during the opening gala.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8787\" style=\"width: 360px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Club-de-Cuervos.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8787\" class=\"wp-image-8787\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Club-de-Cuervos.jpg\" alt=\"Club de Cuervos\" width=\"350\" height=\"201\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Club-de-Cuervos.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/11\/Club-de-Cuervos-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 350px) 100vw, 350px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8787\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The director of the highest grossing film in Mexican history has now created the first Spanish language original for Netflix. Gaz Alazraki, the man behind the enormously successful comedy Nosotros los Nobles, is also the driving force behind Club de Cuervos, a new television series about the feuding heirs of a Mexican soccer team.<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Red carpet glamor aside, development will be a major focus of the festival. Come Meet Neighbors meetings bring together producers and executives from the three North American film industries, \u00a0Cabos in Progress helps films in the production stage, and the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund, as previously mentioned, supports Mexicans filmmakers during both the early and post-production stages of their projects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most exciting, though, is the introduction of Cabos TV, a new platform dedicated to fostering a healthy dialogue between cinema and television, from the development to the marketing phases. New series, and some still in development, will be shown on the big screen during the festival. Most notably, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Club de Cuervos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a show about the feuding heirs of a Mexican soccer team. Co-created, produced, and directed by Gaz Alazraki, whose 2013 feature <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nosotros los Nobles<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the highest grossing film in the history of Mexican cinema, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Club de Cuervos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the first Spanish language original offered by Netflix.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Additionally, would-be creators of the next <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Club de Cuervos<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> will be able to meet with executives from HBO, Netflix, Sundance TV, AMC, HBO LA, Gaumont International Television, Awesomeness, Bell Media, Claro TV and Sony Pictures Television M\u00e9xico during the festival.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For more information about tickets, films, television series, and scheduling, visit <a href=\"http:\/\/cabosfilmfestival.com\" target=\"_blank\">cabosfilmfestival.com<\/a>.
