But the biggest single event, not only locally but nationally, takes place in September.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s M\u00e9xico&#8217;s\u00a0Independence Day, or D\u00eda de la Independencia, which is officially commemorated on September 16, although celebrations actually begin the night before.<\/p>\n<p>For U.S. visitors unfamiliar with the holiday, imagine the 4<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px; line-height: 20px;\">th<\/span>\u00a0of July\u2026only with a lot more fireworks. Don\u2019t make the make the mistake common to many <em>gringos<\/em>, however, of confusing Cinco de Mayo with Mexican Independence Day. The former remembers the victory of the Mexican Army over occupying French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862, and is probably more celebrated in the U.S. than it is in M\u00e9xico. So if you&#8217;re visiting Los Cabos during the month of September, expect to see a lot of Mexican flags.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Independence Day, on the other hand, stirs patriotic feelings to such an extent that much of September\u2013also known as <em>el mes de la patria<\/em> (the country\u2019s month)\u2013is given over to patriotic parties (<em>las fiestas patrias<\/em>) of one kind or another in towns and cities across the country.<\/p>\n<p>So what event does Independence Day commemorate?<\/p>\n<p>In the year 1810, a priest named Miguel Hidalgo (full name: Don Miguel Gregorio Antonio Ignacio Hidalgo-Costilla y Gallaga Mandarte Villase\u00f1or) uttered what is now famously known as the Grito de Dolores: basically a cry of freedom, a call for revolution based on the belief that M\u00e9xico must free itself from the rule of Spain, which had controlled the country\u2013then known as New Spain\u2013since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/2015\/07\/a-brief-history-of-los-cabos-part-ii-the-galleon-trade-and-the-golden-age-of-piracy\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hernan Cort\u00e9s and<em> Los Conquistadores<\/em><\/a> toppled Tenochtitl\u00e1n in 1521.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_8416\" style=\"width: 210px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Miguel_Hidalgo_con_estandarte.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8416\" class=\"wp-image-8416\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Miguel_Hidalgo_con_estandarte.jpg\" alt=\"Miguel_Hidalgo_con_estandarte\" width=\"200\" height=\"309\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Miguel_Hidalgo_con_estandarte.jpg 600w, https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/09\/Miguel_Hidalgo_con_estandarte-194x300.jpg 194w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-8416\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A 19th century painting of Miguel Hidalgo.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Hidalgo gave this call to arms twice: once on the evening of September 15, and again on the morning of the 16 in the small town of Dolores near Guanajuato. The subsequent rebellion led to the Mexican War of Independence, which finally ended on September 28, 1821, when new president (and later emperor) of M\u00e9xico Agust\u00edn de Iturbide issued the fledgling country&#8217;s official Declaration of Independence from Spain.<\/p>\n<p>Contemporary celebrations of Mexican Independence Day generally begin on the evening of September 15, with reenactments of the\u00a0<em>grito<\/em>\u00a0from the president and public officials around the country\u2013concluded by the thrice repeated phrase \u00a1Viva M\u00e9xico!\u2013a symbolic bell ringing, as well as live music, food and drink, and festive firework celebrations. Parades are typically the main event on Independence Day, and this traditional schedule of events is followed in\u00a0Los Cabos.<\/p>\n<p>Official\u00a0<em>gritos<\/em>\u00a0are always presented in Cabo San Lucas and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/sanjosedelcabo\/\" target=\"_blank\">San Jos\u00e9 del Cabo<\/a>, as elsewhere in M\u00e9xico, at 11 p.m. on September 15.\u00a0Plaza Jos\u00e9 Antonio Mijares\u00a0in San Jos\u00e9 is the best place to see the\u00a0<em>grito<\/em>\u00a0and enjoy all the accompanying festivities, while San Lucas is the perfect place to enjoy the patriotic parade. It begins early on September 16 at the Pabell\u00f3n Cultural de la Rep\u00fablica, and typically includes firefighters, Red Cross, and other civic officials, as well as\u00a0<em>charros<\/em>\u00a0and local schoolchildren.<\/p>\n<p>As one might imagine, celebrations aren\u2019t limited to government sanctioned events.
