I had also read that it would reduce stress levels and I was stressed out. I was rather surprised and slightly annoyed to find that the yoga class I had chosen to attend included a strong spiritual component and chanting. Chanting! Imagine that….

Fortunately, I had paid for several classes in advance because I probably would not have attended a second time. Chanting! What a bunch of new age nonsense. By my third session I was hooked. I had experienced chronic neck and back pain most of my life and by the third class it was gone!

Within the year, I had signed up for yoga teacher training. Why just do something when you can overdo it, I always say. Since I graduated as a level one Kundalini yoga teacher in 2001, I have taught 3 or 4 classes per week. I have seen thousands of people by now since I teach at a resort and the 16-20 people I get change every week.

The most common questions I get from students surround what the different schools of yoga are. It seems that the most popular yogas, the ones that are getting the most converts are Bikram Yoga and Ashtanga Yoga, (also known as flow yoga, power yoga or Vinyasa flow). Bikram is just 26 to 84 Hatha yoga postures done in a room that is heated up to 104 degrees. I suspect that the reason these yogas are most popular with people is they are much more focused on getting beautiful than getting spiritual. They work well for both if you want them to.

In Kundalini yoga, in contrast to Bikram`s 84 postures, we have literally thousands of postures, breathing techniques and meditations. Kundalini is a good yoga for total beginners and as you progress it becomes one of the toughest yoga classes you can find.

Ultimately, people are drawn to one type of practice or another based on what they are looking for. If you are looking for a spiritual experience, any school of classical yoga will help you do that by calming your mind. The deep breathing and concentration of yoga will make meditation, with or without chanting, an easier experience.

Why do we meditate? If you can stop talking with your mouth and your mind you can “self-realize”. You will begin to realize your true nature and not what your ego mind tells you You are. Most of our life is lived in the mind, worrying about things that ultimately don`t matter that much, namely the past and the future. Nothing can be done about either but our mind keeps us in the past with resentments and in the future with worry. The mind is a constant categorizer and comparer. The purpose of meditation is to try to shut down the destructive babbling of the brain, even if only for a moment..

For more information on yoga classes in the Los Cabos area, you can contact me at robynlittlewood@yahoo.com or text me at 624 113 9532 locally.

When I first attended a yoga class back in 1999, I went because I knew that stretching was important to keep from getting injured and I knew I did not stretch enough.
