At\u00a0Sabor a Cabo<\/em><\/a>, the area\u2019s premier culinary festival, Los Cabos<\/a> mayor Tony Ag\u00fandez presented the keys to the city to iconic KISS stars Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. \u00a0It was a richly deserved honor, but considering their gleefully decadent past, a rather unexpected one.<\/p>\n

\u201cIn our early days in rock and roll,\u201d Stanley joked, \u201cmayors were doing everything possible to lock us out of their cities.\u201d<\/p>\n

The musicians-cum-restaurateurs were in Los Cabos for the grand opening of a new Rock & Brews restaurant and beer garden at Plaza Bonita<\/a>\u00a0<\/span>in Cabo San Lucas<\/a>. On Friday night, the marina boardwalk was thronged near the restaurant\u2019s entrance, as fans jockeyed for photo opportunities with the two, both of whom had turned out in full rock god regalia:\u00a0 Simmons sporting wraparound shades, a red velvet scarf and studded cowboy boots, Stanley a piratical shirt and silver buckled shoes.<\/p>\n

Later, in the courtyard behind the restaurant, guests sat at picnic tables sipping cocktails and snacking on complimentary hot wings as an energetic local rock band ripped through a string of hard rock classics. During a lull between sets, Simmons and Stanley took the stage to thank the assembled crowd.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is a very special place,\u201d Stanley said.\u00a0 \u201cIt has a lot of passion, a lot of coraz\u00f3n<\/em>. We\u2019re proud to be here and be a part of this community. Cabo is unstoppable.\u201d<\/p>\n

Simmons and Stanley have both made a point of using the words \u201cUnstoppable\u201d and \u201cCabo Strong\u201d in their recent public appearances. Those are the keywords, the hashtags most commonly associated with rebuilding efforts following Hurricane Odile, the strongest storm ever to make landfall on the Baja peninsula.<\/p>\n

Due to the timing of their second Rock & Brews<\/a> location in Los Cabos \u2013 the first opened at Plaza del Pescador in San Jos\u00e9 del Cabo in March, 2013 \u2013 the two rock stars have become de facto<\/em> spokesmen for the city\u2019s economic recovery. \u00a0The repeated use of these inspirational slogans is of course a conscious decision, but one that seems rooted in a genuine concern for and commitment to the community.<\/p>\n

Both men have longstanding ties to the area. Stanley has been visiting Los Cabos \u201cforever,\u201d and even spent his honeymoon here. Simmons, referring to his own local history, simply noted: \u00a0\u201ceverybody who is anybody has been sneaking down here for years.\u201d And like many local business people, Stanley and Simmons were adversely affected by the hurricane. Their San Jos\u00e9 del Cabo<\/a> based restaurant was severely damaged, and delays were caused in the opening of the Cabo San Lucas location.<\/p>\n

Even hurricanes, however, seem incapable of slowing the growth of Rock & Brews for any appreciable amount of time. The rock & roll themed restaurant chain \u2013 the brainchild of Simmons and Stanley, as well as fellow founding partners Michael Zislis and Dave Furano \u2013 has exhibited rapid growth since launching in 2012.<\/p>\n

The concept is simple: rock-inspired d\u00e9cor like concert posters, legendary album covers and other musical memorabilia paired with American comfort food favorites and craft beers, and served by warm, welcoming staff.<\/p>\n

Simple but effective. In the two years since the partners premiered their first restaurant in El Segundo, California, Rock & Brews has opened ten additional locations in the U.S. and M\u00e9xico, and more are in the works. Stanley reckons annual growth at about 20 percent, and Simmons hints that they may also open a hotel at some point.<\/p>\n

Neither man is shy about the brand\u2019s global aspirations, and at this point in their careers, who can doubt them? As members of KISS, they have sold over 100 million records worldwide, making them the backbone of one of the most successful bands of all-time.<\/p>\n

Sheraton’s Hacienda del Mar<\/a> resort rolled out the red carpet for a VIP meet and greet with rock stars and entrepreneurs Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. The event was held just prior to the opening of their latest Los Cabos restaurant.<\/p><\/div>\n

Los Cabos is expected to be at the forefront of the restaurant chain\u2019s global expansion (the San Jos\u00e9 del Cabo Rock & Brews was, in fact, the franchise\u2019s first international location). According to Simmons, all employees for future restaurants in Canc\u00fan, Argentina and elsewhere in Latin America will be trained here.<\/p>\n

\u201cLos Cabos is going to see unprecedented growth in the next 10 years,\u201d says Simmons.\u00a0 \u201cWe\u2019re excited to be a part of that.\u201d<\/p>\n

What sets Rock & Brews apart from rock and roll themed chains? It\u2019s a combination of the brand\u2019s wide ranging appeal and the band\u2019s loyal fan base. KISS\u2019 longevity \u2013 the group originally formed in 1971 \u2013 has spawned generations of fans comfortable with the restaurants\u2019 classic rock and roll vibe, with hip DJs spinning tunes after the dinner rush.<\/p>\n

Yet they\u2019re also family-friendly. Kids love the colorful atmosphere and comfort food favorites, and the restaurants showcase a decidedly younger demographic during daylight hours. The Cabo San Lucas restaurant\u2019s prime waterfront location, with its al fresco<\/em> dining area, is also sure to appeal to cruise ship passengers.<\/p>\n
