Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives just blew through Cabo and I was humbled to have been chosen as a location for their shoot. The whole experience was a bit of a whirlwind (as I imagine these kinds of productions usually are), but everything couldn’t have gone smoother. Everyone involved, from the Field Producer and camera crew, to the Executive Producer and Guy Fieri himself, showed nothing but respect for each other, for us and for the fans. Guy was very casual about meeting some wandering fans that happened upon him while he was taking a break between setups in what he thought was a ‘hidden’ area. He shook hands, asked them about where they were from, etc. and overall seemed happy to meet new people. Of course no one in a position of celebrity wants to get bombarded by a large group of people that are autograph-seeking or photo-hunting, but Guy handled the situation very well. And I can tell you that the show he puts on for the cameras isn’t rehearsed or faked. I accidentally over-salted a dish and when he tasted it he said, “Well, it’s a risotto.” When I figured out my error, I told him, “Ah-ha! I over salted that risotto by the way!” He just smiled and nodded, knowing that I had accidentally tossed in the salt twice. He didn’t give a fake, “Boy, that’s good!” response for the show. He knew it was bad and that I made a mistake. I like that; he’s a real guy and isn’t just lying about the food for the camera…he tells it like he sees it.

As for the crew involved with the production, enough can’t be said about their professionalism, passion and good nature. From top to bottom, everyone seemed to enjoy their time while working and got along like a close family. Fun was had, oh yes, but the one thing that came before everything else was the quality of the work. Cameras had to be perfectly tuned to the right color balance, sound needed to be measured to the millisecond so that it was in sync; their level of competence and drive was astounding.

Solomon’s Landing, and myself personally, couldn’t have had a better experience, or have been more proud of being selected for the show. We tried to go out of our way to assist the film crew any way that we could, and they reciprocated by helping us out too (tips and tricks to make things look better for TV). There were a few bumps, like when Guy had to film an outside shot of the restaurant (on a busy marina) and standers-by would shout out at him and try to get in the shot, but the crew was very professional and politely asked people to keep quiet and not to walk into the line of the camera. Guy even signed some stuff for people and had a few conversations with those that showed a little respect during shooting.

The integrity of these people trying to put together a half hour TV show about food in Cabo over four, quick-paced days of filming is unequaled. I’ve met movie stars and Hollywood types before. These people are not that. I had a great time and I know Guy and the crew did too. Guy and his friends even came back into our restaurant and watched some football with us after he was done shooting for the day! Enough can’t be said, so I guess I’ll just stop there. Thank you everyone for coming to town and making it work, I feel proud to be a part of the Triple D family!

Thanks to:

Mike Morris
Neil Martin
Anthony Rodriguez
David Canada
Ron Gabaldon
Matt Giovinetti
Frank Matson
Kat Higgins
Stephanie Elmer
and Guy Fieri

-Brian Solomon
Solomon’s Landing Restaurant
http://www.loscabosguide.com/solomons/index.html

Whew!
