{"id":2584,"date":"2013-11-14T07:23:34","date_gmt":"2013-11-14T14:23:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/?p=2584"},"modified":"2013-11-14T08:24:50","modified_gmt":"2013-11-14T15:24:50","slug":"2nd-annual-baja-film-festival-opens-in-cabo-san-lucas","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/2013\/11\/2nd-annual-baja-film-festival-opens-in-cabo-san-lucas\/","title":{"rendered":"2nd Annual Baja Film Festival Opens in Cabo San Lucas"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The second annual Baja International Film Festival opened last night amid much fanfare, with some of the brightest stars of Mexican film and television walking the red carpet at the Pabell\u00f3n Cultural de La Rep\u00fablica in <a title=\"Cabo San Lucas\" href=\"http:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/cabosanlucas\/\" target=\"_blank\">Cabo San Lucas<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Crowds lined the entrance of the Cultural Pavilion hoping for glimpses of their favorite actors and actresses\u2014Daniel Gim\u00e9nez Cacho, Ana de la Reguera, Jos\u00e9 Mar\u00eda de Tavira, Alfonso Herrera, Irene Azuela and Hugo Stiglitz were among the many prestigious attendees\u2014and the second edition of Baja&#8217;s answer to Cannes and Sundance kicked off in style with a screening of the opening night film, <em>Metegol<\/em> (Foosball), an animated feature from Academy Award-winning Argentine director Juan Jos\u00e9 Campanella.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2586\" style=\"width: 385px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BIFF3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2586\" class=\" wp-image-2586   \" title=\"Baja International Film Festival\" alt=\"Baja International Film Festival\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BIFF3.jpg\" width=\"375\" height=\"265\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BIFF3.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BIFF3-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 375px) 100vw, 375px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2586\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Crowds lined the red carpet at the Pabell\u00f3n Cultural de La Rep\u00fablica in Cabo San Lucas, hoping for glimpses of their favorite stars on opening night of the second annual Baja International Film Festival.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Other highlights of last night&#8217;s opening ceremonies, overseen by festival director Alonso Aguilar-Castillo, included a special recognition, presented by Ana de la Reguera, for the work of Canadian writer and director Philippe Falardeau, who garnered an Oscar nomination in 2011 for his film <em>Monsieur Lazhar<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>At an afternoon press conference, Campanella, who won a coveted Best Foreign Film Oscar for his 2009 drama <em>El Secreto de Sus Ojos<\/em> (The Secret in Their Eyes), discussed the genesis and journey of his current film, <em>Metegol<\/em>, which took more than three years to complete.<\/p>\n<p>The presence of the acclaimed Latin American director is a coup for the festival, which will also host special guests Charlie Sheen and iconic British filmmaker Peter Greenaway. Best known for his 1989 film <em>The Cook, the Thief, His Wife &amp; Her Lover<\/em>, Greenaway will appear to discuss his latest project, <em>Eisenstein in Guanajuato<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This year&#8217;s <a title=\"Baja International Film Festival\" href=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/2013\/09\/lights-camera-action-baja-international-film-festival-to-return-in-november\/\" target=\"_blank\">Baja International Film Festival<\/a> will be the site of several highly anticipated screenings, including the world premiers of the films <em>El Charro Misterioso<\/em> by director Jos\u00e9 Manuel Cravioto, <em>Volando Bajo<\/em> by Beto G\u00f3mez, <em>Bering: Balance and Resistance<\/em> by Lourdes Grobet, <em>Natural Philosophy of Love<\/em> by Sebasti\u00e1n Hiriart, and<em> LuTo<\/em> by Katina Medina Mora. Mexican premiers will include <em>Fading Gigolo<\/em> from actor and director John Turturro, the Matthew McConaughey vehicle <em>Dallas Buyers Club<\/em>, and <em>Only Lovers Left Alive<\/em> from Jim Jarmusch, acclaimed director of cult favorites such as<em> Down by Law<\/em>, <em>Mystery Train<\/em>, and <em>Night on Earth<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BIFF.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2587 alignright\" title=\"Baja International Film Festival\" alt=\"Baja International Film Festival\" src=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BIFF.jpg\" width=\"417\" height=\"294\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BIFF.jpg 850w, https:\/\/www.loscabosguide.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/BIFF-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 417px) 100vw, 417px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The ultimate goal of the festival, which continues through Sunday, November 17, is to build a bridge between the film industries in Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Today&#8217;s screenings begin at noon in the Cinemex at Puerto Paraiso and conclude this evening with a showing of <em>El Objeto Antes Llamado Disco: La Pel\u00edcula<\/em>, a documentary about the latest album from the Mexican band Caf\u00e9 Tacuba that will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Pabell\u00f3n Cultural de La Rep\u00fablica.
