And let’s face it, for home or hotel delivery, the best food choices are seldom fine dining staples like steak or lobster. Those exalted dishes are best enjoyed amid the casually elegant ambiance of area restaurant standouts such as Alcaravea Gourmet, Baja Cantina, Bar Esquina, Maca Tasca Española, Lorenzillo’s, or Sunset da Mona Lisa. For delivery purposes, you want comfort food that will soothe the travel or weather weary soul. With that in mind, here are a few of my favorite local delivery options.

Restaurant and juice emporium Rico Suave maintains its own fleet of ATV delivery vehicles.

Every time I think of Rico Suave (624-143-1043), I remember the terrible bilingual 1990 rap song by Gerardo, who my Mexican friends are always quick to point out was actually Ecuadoran. And I think of this restaurant a lot. It has the freshest, most delicious fruit and vegetable juices and smoothies in town, and nothing clears the morning (or afternoon) fogs quite like a heart healthy mixture of beet and carrot juice, or a Choyero smoothie with melon and papaya. The food is also delicious, and menu options include comfort food standards like omelets, burritos, burgers, and salads. Tortas (sandwiches) are the house specialty, however, and are named for various states and countries. Located across from Rudo’s Gym on Calle Lázaro Cárdenas, Rico Suave is recognizable by the delivery vehicles parked out front – basically, ATVs with large wooden boxes affixed to ferry the frequent food and beverage requests. Rico Suave is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., and charges by delivery zone, although fees never exceed $1.50 U.S.

Chicken Shack (624-173-0923) is the rare delivery option that doesn’t come from a restaurant. Instead, these delicious fried chicken combos come from a home kitchen, and are delivered by a man who always announces his arrival with with an unerringly convincing rooster imitation. I’ve heard several locals compare the fried chicken to that produced by KFC, which is an insult. Chicken Shack’s food is far superior. Each order costs $220 pesos (about $18 U.S.), and consists of 10 pieces of chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, cole slaw, biscuits, an homemade chocolate chip cookies. It’s enough food to comfortably feed four adults, and daily dessert selections like key lime pie are also available. These chicken combos are perfect comfort food sustenance on rainy days, but they also make great picnic food for beach outings or fishing trips. Chicken Shack makes a certain amount of orders each day, and when they’re gone, they’re gone. The best time to order is between noon and 8 p.m.

Need a late night pizza fix? Call La Maestra Pizza Cafe.

La Maestra Pizza Cafe (624-105-0464) is located in the heart of Cabo San Lucas’ nightlife district, but also delivers to those who have partied themselves out. Salads, calzones, and sodas are offered on the menu, but it’s the pies that have made La Maestra—formerly Vero Pizza Cafe—such a beloved local institution. The Margarita, in particular, is mouthwateringly delicious. It’s made with tomato, basil, and olive oil, and I’ve convinced myself that it’s also incredibly healthy (which it probably is, if I ever pair it with something besides beer). La Maestra’s pizza prices are comparable to those of Domino’s or Pizza Hut in the United States (or Los Cabos), but good luck finding the same food quality or delivery hours. La Maestra opens daily at noon, but stays open late, particularly on weekends. The pizzeria is a phone call away until midnight on Sunday and Monday, 3 a.m. on Tuesday–Thursday, and 5 a.m. on Friday and Saturday.

Whether it’s one of those rare September days when tropical rains have put a damper on your vacation plans or you’re feeling a bit lethargic after an exhaustive tour of the Cabo San Lucas nightlife scene, there are times when nothing satisfies like a food delivery.
