The Los Cabos International Film Festival<\/a> wrapped up on Sunday November , with a final series of screenings capping off another successful five-day whirlwind of red carpet galas, movie premieres, elegant cocktail parties and behind the scenes dealmaking.<\/p>\n

Women were the big winners at the 5th annual edition, with female directrors taking home top prizes in most of the festival\u2019s major categories. Andrea Arnold\u2019s American Honey<\/em>, about a young woman\u2019s transformational journey across the U.S., took top honors, winning the jury-presented Competencia Los Cabos (Los Cabos<\/a> Competition) over a strong field that included eight other auteur<\/em>-centered independent films.<\/p>\n

Time to roll up the red carpet until next year. The 5th annual Los Cabos International Film Festival came to an end on Sunday, Nov. 13, with screenings of prize winning films and a closing party at ME Cabo Hotel.<\/p><\/div>\n

Luc\u00eda Carreras\u2019 Tamara and the Ladybug<\/em>, a joint Spanish and Mexican production that chronicles the difficulties encountered by a special needs woman and her neighbor when they attempt to return a baby girl to her parents, won the prize in the M\u00e9xico category.<\/p>\n

The biggest cash prize went to The Rosenbergs<\/em>, a revisionist history of Julius and Ethel Rosenberg\u2013Americans executed as Soviet spies in 1953\u2013from French born director Sophie Barthes. She received 50,000 for post-production costs from the Gabriel Figueroa Film Fund, one of the festival\u2019s many behind the scenes production programs. \u00a0The inaugural Investor Summit was also aimed at promoting young filmmakers, and promoting collaboration between the film industries of M\u00e9xico, Canada and the U.S.<\/p>\n

A fourth woman, Mar\u00eda Jos\u00e9 Cuevas, won the Audience Award for her film Bellas de Noche<\/em>, a look at the contemporary lives of famed Mexican showgirls from the 1970s that is by turns sad, funny, uplifting and profound.<\/p>\n

Another woman, Monica Bellucci, was honored with the festival\u2019s Lifetime Achievement Award, earning her the coveted Ballena de Los Cabos<\/em>. The Italian actress appeared to promote her newest film, On the Milky\u00a0 Road<\/em>, a love story set in war-torn Serbia.<\/p>\n

And yet two more women directors, Alejandra M\u00e1rquez (Nieves<\/em>) and Natalia Berist\u00e1in (The Goodbyes<\/em>), were given technical awards. Other winners included the Kris Avedisian directed Donald Cried<\/em>, which took home the Labodigital Award; and Juan Andr\u00e9s and Arango Garc\u00eda\u2019s film X500<\/em>, which was presented with the Cinemex Award.<\/p>\n

Bellucci and Dennis Quaid joined the list of international movie stars who have made the pilgrimmage to Los Cabos for the festival, a roll call that already included Edward Norton, Reese Witherspoon, Liam Neeson, Matt Dillon, Ewan McGregor and Virginia Madsen.<\/p>\n
