Review “La Última Oportunidad”
Movie Review: La Última Oportunidad This Thursday evening I had the opportunity of attending the premiere screening of “La Última Oportunidad” a Mexican rom-com that, despite taking place in Mexico City, came to life in Los Cabos. Synopsis: Vanesa (Jeniffer Flores) is a 25 years old woman that decides to give herself a “last chance” to find the love of her life. After many failed attepts she realizes that the problem is her, not those around her. Love is whre she expect it the least, but she is afraid. After many dificulties she decides to finaly face her ghost and tries to build a relationship whit someone she wasn’t expecting. La Última Oprtunidad is the first movie of director Rodolfo Palacios, an under-budget film shot through the pandemic that serves as the first showcase for most of its cast. The movie reflects the rushed and chaotic production, there are scenes out of focus and audio problems that become jarring when trying to follow the story. One has to assume those problems only make it to the final product when you have no otter choice, no second take, no chance for re-shoots, but it feels wrong to excuse these kinds of […]

Officials commemorate 5 de Mayo and the 117th anniversary of the “the old lighthouse”
The solemn Faro Viejo (old lighthouse) was the venue for the civic ceremony commemorating the 160th anniversary of the Battle of Puebla, as well as the 117th anniversary of the lighthouse; an event led by Mayor Oscar Leggs Castro, where he issued a strong and forceful message to the citizens: “Let it be heard loud and clear, as president I will fight so that the lighthouse has free access for all, we are going to rescue our historical sites. Free access to the Old Lighthouse!” Regarding 5 de Mayo, a date that marked one of the most glorious chapters in the history of Mexico, Oscar Leggs Castro honored the memory of men and women who, due to their courage, sacrifice, and high sense of patriotism, sacrificed their lives for the national sovereignty, thus recalling the phrase expressed in a telegram by General Ignacio Zaragoza “National arms have been covered with glory.” The official speech was given by the municipal delegate Raymundo Zamora Ceseña, who stated that the Battle of Puebla is a historic event that marked a turning point in the history of Mexicans: “Today the country, the state, and the municipality are facing the adversities generated by the […]
No Bad Days in Cabo; Learning to live in Cabo San Lucas
No bad days in Cabo. Every day a repeat, every day the same sun, the same wind, the same heat. The seasons pass with inescapable ease, the shorter days and colder dreams of winter open pass to the sharp spring sunlight. Here I awake and from a balcony, I feel the soothing wind. I’ve seen the morning air covered by a thick foggy veil. I’ve seen ferocious obscure clouds move through the sky and cover the city. I’ve seen the rain that comes after transforming the main streets into dangerous rivers. And then, as in a repetitive children’s tail, a cliché cuts through my uncalled cynicism. The sun shines through. The same sun. Silver linings cover the horizon. The same wind. Clouds and fog disappear becoming no more than a passing memory. The same heat. Rivers turn into humid concrete. No Bad Days, is the slogan of Cabo San Lucas. A common sight in a windshield sticker. As the months pass and Cabo becomes my home I’m left reflecting on this phrase, this loaded promise. Every day may feel the same, every walk as trying, every evening as sunny. With the peace of the sun coming out that promise […]
Reshaping the community; Cabo San Lucas Bike-Way
Reclaiming the street. The main streets of Cabo San Lucas are often the picture of careless nightlife, thousands of cars move beside sidewalks inundated by the smell of alcohol and the constant cheers of restless parties. But every Sunday morning, as the party dies down and the sun presents itself behind the blue infinity of the Sea of Cortez, cars are set aside and the streets become a playground for those who refuse to stay inside. Al around the world a movement has developed over the last decades, cities have taken their veins and emptied them from the thousands of vehicles that inhabit them, allowing walkers to move in them, bicycles, scooters, rollerskates, and skateboards reclaim these spaces for a few hours. Here kids learn to ride a bike, for them, this world becomes a new normal. The city becomes a place for humans. In Cabo San Lucas this has taken place over the last dozen years. Every cone. Every bicycle available to rent. Even the Zumba lessons. Everything was a donation. Cabo San Lucas bikeway is one of the few examples of this movement that doesn’t count with the economic help of the authorities. The support of […]
Reviewing the Festival Sabores de Baja
Surrounded by traditional food, this Sunday, April 3rd, the Los Cabos community had a glance at the past and future of events in the region. After years of forced quiet Los Cabo’s voice slowly raises, and calls the world to once more come and rejoice. Upon entering Doña Pame’s restaurant one is met by a peaceful garden, capturing and displaying the face of rural areas in the region, embracing it, making it the main attraction. A few local artists proudly show their work, welcoming you as you cross the door into the party. The peace fills a little garden surrounded by the few who are still gathering the will to start the celebration in themselves. In the early spring light, you can see the peace of many breakfasts taking place here, meanwhile, in the back, an old stone furnace evokes hundreds of cold nights with a traditional cup of coffee. And as people enter, they keep walking, guided towards a sand path inviting you to see what’s behind. Loose sand forces you to descend slowly, to be wary of your steps, and at your own pace, face this land’s food and people. The Food of Los Cabos filled […]
