La Trattoria is a landmark all its own. Passersby can’t help but notice the glassed-in covered patio and are drawn into this charming little sidewalk restaurant sitting in the very center of downtown Cabo San Lucas. Once inside, this quaint bistro with its soaring ceilings and faux-finished walls resembles a winding little street in Italy, giving it an authentic Italian feel.
The restaurant was opened in 1994 by the son of a well-known head chef who has been in Los Cabos for 40 years. The new owner since December 2006, Juan Castañeda, plans to remodel the facility by adding air conditioning and moving the bar outside to allow more interior seating in comfort.
An extensive menu offers good food prepared by a Mexican chef who cooks with real Italian flair, serving up the same Mediterranean-style fare that patrons have come to enjoy over the years. From antipasto to pasta to the specialties of the house, including fish, chicken, veal, and seafood, and an open oven ready for the multi-variety homemade pizzas, there is something for everyone.
For starters or light lunch, the baked eggplant parmigiana is perfect. If you can’t decide which pasta, select the Trattoria Combo, three of Italy’s most famous dishes: cannelloni, lasagna, and fettuccine Alfredo. For dinner entrees, choose from veal in white wine and lemon, or spaghetti with mussels, clams, olive oil, garlic, and hot red pepper. The beef medallions in red wine with anchovies, the lobster ravioli, and the veal medallions with lemon and capers are some of the house specialties.
For dessert, try the delicately made tiramisu. If you’re interested in friendly staff, reasonable prices, good food, a nice wine list, you should walk over to La Trattoria. It is perfect for lunch, but better for dinner, when you want to spend a relaxing hour or two with friends eating good food and watching the world go by.
