Cabo San Lucas Restaurants

If its warm, earth-toned walls, oversize Italia map, and old-world chandelier are not enough to transport you, La Trattoria authentic Mediterranean-style dishes will. Juan Castañeda’s spot, a fixture in downtown Cabo San Lucas since 1994, offers diners both a menu replete with traditional Italian classics and a much-needed reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the area’s ubiquitous nightclubs.

Nestled in the Plaza Bonita mall, across the street from the raucous El Squid Roe and a minute’s stroll from the marina, La Trattoria provides restaurant-goers with one of the town’s more intimate and mature dining experiences. Low lighting and faux-finished walls make for a romantic backdrop—there’s also outdoor seating, perfect for people watching—while Michael Jackson and Police music videos streaming on the various televisions demonstrate the restaurant’s amazing sense of self, one that extends to the menu. This is still Cabo, after all.

Head chef Carlos Campos has created an extensive menu that combines authentic Italian recipes with fresh Baja-sourced ingredients.

Starters include a better-than-average frittura de calamari (de rigueur at any Italian spot worth its salt) and a wonderfully complex spinach salad made with cantaloupe, pears, nuts, balsamic, and a just-right amount of pepperoni. Wood oven–baked pizzas, most notably the Margherita, and entrées such as the lobster agnolotti (lobster-and-ricotta-stuffed ravioli) and garlicky catch of the day are fundamental.

The attentive wait staff, led by manager David Castellanos, can help you pair your meal with any of the restaurant’s recently restructured selection of Italian, Chilean, or Californian vinos. Finish the evening with an espresso and one of La Trattoria’s desserts, including decadent chocolate cake and classic tiramisu, which are transcendent—not unlike the restaurant. Open daily from 12 a.m. to 12 p.m. Blvd. Marina M17, Plaza Bonita mall, 624-143-0068. All major credit cards accepted.

La Trattoria Restaurant Bar
Los Cabos Guide – Restaurant and Dining Review – March 2007 – by Sandra Berry.

La Trattoria is a landmark all its own. Passersby can’t help but notice the glassed-in covered patio and are drawn into this charming little sidewalk restaurant sitting in the very center of downtown Cabo San Lucas. Once inside, this quaint bistro with its soaring ceilings and faux-finished walls resembles a winding little street in Italy, giving it an authentic Italian feel.

The restaurant was opened in 1994 by the son of a well-known head chef who has been in Los Cabos for 40 years. The new owner since December 2006, Juan Castañeda, plans to remodel the facility by adding air conditioning and moving the bar outside to allow more interior seating in comfort.

An extensive menu offers good food prepared by a Mexican chef who cooks with real Italian flair, serving up the same Mediterranean-style fare that patrons have come to enjoy over the years. From antipasto to pasta to the specialties of the house, including fish, chicken, veal, and seafood, and an open oven ready for the multi-variety homemade pizzas, there is something for everyone.

For starters or light lunch, the baked eggplant parmigiana is perfect. If you can’t decide which pasta, select the Trattoria Combo, three of Italy’s most famous dishes: cannelloni, lasagna, and fettuccine Alfredo. For dinner entrees, choose from veal in white wine and lemon, or spaghetti with mussels, clams, olive oil, garlic, and hot red pepper. The beef medallions in red wine with anchovies, the lobster ravioli, and the veal medallions with lemon and capers are some of the house specialties.

For dessert, try the delicately made tiramisu. If you’re interested in friendly staff, reasonable prices, good food, a nice wine list, you should walk over to La Trattoria. It is perfect for lunch, but better for dinner, when you want to spend a relaxing hour or two with friends eating good food and watching the world go by.

Appetizers from $5 to $15 U.S. for carpaccio, thinly sliced marinated beef. Pasta from $8 to $10 U.S. Entrees $13 to $22 U.S. Seating for 50 outside, 40 inside, groups of 100. Located on Marina Boulevard across from El Squid Roe, near Puerto Paraiso Mall. Open for lunch from 11 a.m. until midnight. Validated parking in Plaza Bonita Mall. All credit cards accepted. For reservations, call (624) 143-0068.––Sandra Berry.
