Los Cabos Guide - Restaurant and Dining Review - March 20, 2007 - by Anna Urbanik

Only a stone’s throw from the historic church is San Jose del Cabo, La Bodega Steak and Wine House has added a new, exciting flavor to Los Cabos fine contemporary dining with its August 2006 opening.

Stepping into La Bodega (the warehouse) feels like entering a loft even though it’s located on street level. Showing off modern interior lines of the air-conditioned dining room, it expands out to a cozy outdoor patio shaded with a canopy of an old tree. With the neat line of wooden tables faced by a long bar on the inside and the romantic setting outside, La Bodega is a sleek yet comfortable dinner
spot for any occasion.

Their bill of fare is eclectic: Mexican and bistro cuisines meet comfort food, resulting in well-balanced and artfully presented dinner choices designed to be surprising sensory delights.

The menu is creative from the inside out––literally, with wooden covers complementing the industrial-like design. Mexican-style seafood items like shrimp, octopus or squid highlight the appetizer list, while the golden crispy Turnover Trio, filled with spinach, Provolone cheese, shredded beef, corn and chili, is a hit.

And then there are steaks, the house specialty––tender certified Angus beef that comes with an array of comforting fixings. Mashed potatoes, cauliflower puree, wild rice with spinach and mushrooms are some of them, while the highlight among the sauces is La Borracha (the drunk sauce) with beer,
ancho chili and herbs.

Other entrée options include smoked chicken breast, which transports you to the countryside with its peculiar homemade flavor. The night I visited the catch of the day was sea bass accompanied by a flavorful yet not imposing herb, garlic and lime sauce.

Entrée prices range from $18 U.S. to $32 for steaks.

Portions are moderate so you should have some room left for dessert. Go for the key lime pie or a lighter passion fruit sherbet.

The long bar spills forth with diverse cocktails and an extensive wine list to pair with delicately prepared steaks, Mexican flavors, and tempting desserts. La Bodega offers about five whites and reds by the glass and a broad selection of bottles mostly from North and South America, as well as Europe––directly from their temperature-controlled wine cellar.

Every month a special vintage is featured with a brief description of the wine. When I visited, it was the Argentinean Norton Malbec Reserve.

Located on Zaragoza, between Guerrero and Morelos in downtown San José del Cabo, La Bodega has a capacity for 80 persons including the indoor salon and the outside patio. Open for dinner from Monday through Saturday from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m. Visa, MasterCard and traveler’s checks are accepted. For reservations, call (624) 142-6619.––Anna Urbanik.
