Puerto Los Cabos - San Jose del Cabo, Los Cabos, Mexico
What's New at Puerto Los Cabos: Phase one nearing completion at Mexico's Largest Marina Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico (November 15, 2007)A new era has arrived for fishermen and yacht owners in Los Cabos. Following almost three years of accelerated work, the nearly 50-million-dollar Marina at Puerto Los Cabos is opening this december and will accommodate yachts up to 180 feet. The heart of Grupo Questro’s master plan for Puerto Los Cabos, the new marina, will ultimately be the largest in Mexico, with over 21,000 linear feet of dock space. Upon the opening of Phase One this fall about 90 slips will be completed. Dedicated megayacht slips to 180 feet will be available in Phase Two of construction, with the goal of becoming the new “must stop” port of call on the megayacht circuit. Yacht club facilities will commence construction late this year, and by late 2008 the majority of the 430 slips will be fully operational. Walking the perimeter of the marina is already impressive, with its beautiful stone entrances at all marina entry points, incredible landscaping, and even solid bronze dock cleats. Beyond the cosmetics, however, are some truly staggering statistics as to what was excavated, dredged, or moved to build the facility. The breakwaters are the largest private breakwaters ever built in Mexico, using over 400,000 tons of granitic rock blasted from the nearby quarry. Some of the capstones weigh 60 tons- all to ensure that the marina meets its goal of being adequately protected in case of a hurricane. Even before construction began, a continual convoy of dump trucks was employed to bring in the thousands of tons of rocks that would comprise the jetties, running 6 days per week for 8 months just to keep up with the quantities needed to finish. For the marina basin itself, the “Big Dig” involved the removal of over 650,000 cubic meters of dirt, sand, and rock using excavators and dump trucks. And this does not include the dredging program for areas that were inaccessible to excavators- another 25,000 cubic meters! The vision of a marina in San Jose del Cabo has its roots dating back to the early 1990s. However it wasn’t until local pioneers Eduardo Sanchez Navarro and Jorge Buch created an investment group, began planning and made this vision a reality. EDSA of Fort Lauderdale and Applied Technology and Management of South Carolina were brought in to create a master planned community, with the marina at its heart. Harbor Town at Hilton Head was used as the inspiration for the curved basin section of the final design, and in early 2004 excavators dug into the old soccer fields that would soon become a marina. While new sports fields were being built nearby, engineers excavated the actual marina. The basin was opened to the sea during the last phase, in 2006, when the temporary lake would finally be connected to the tides and salt waters of the Sea of Cortez. The Marina at Puerto Los Cabos is also ideally located about an hour closer to the Gordo Banks than Cabo San Lucas, giving fishermen added time to savor the thrill of these renowned fishing grounds. Its location also takes advantage of a natural sea canyon offshore, which minimizes wave action and makes the approach easier to navigate. Recognizing that customer service is of the utmost importance, the Marina at Puerto Los Cabos will offer world-class facilities and service. When completed, the marina will include a vibrant waterfront complete with an authentic town plaza offering shops, restaurants, and a marketplace for fresh fish, fruits and vegetables. | Puerto Los Cabos Marina | Puerto Los Cabos Golf Course | Puerto Los Cabos Homesites | Main Page |
