| Belly up at The Sushi Bar Nick-San Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar- Los Cabos Guide review by Sheri Lynn Wilson - October 15, 2003 I have already written a raving review about dining at Nick-San Japanese Restaurant and Sushi Bar, but I absolutely had to follow it up with an additional review on dining belly up at the Sushi Bar. What a fascinating experience! I was literally awestruck by the talent the Sushi chefs possess. Once my guest and I were seated at the Sushi bar, we were immediately ‘set up’ with a placemat, chopsticks, napkin, a dish for our dipping sauce, and a dish with fresh ginger and wasabi. Our drink orders were taken, and I (of course) had the Sake; my friend a glass of wine. I asked Angel, the owner and master chef, if he (along with his assistant chefs) would mind surprising us with their personal choices of selections from the Sushi menu. They were delighted to do so. The first treat we sampled was called ‘Negi Maguro’, sliced tuna sashimi sautéed in olive oil, garlic, chives, soy sauce and miso. The tuna was extremely fresh, most likely caught that afternoon. This delicious dish is served cold and warm. Next, we were served ‘Sashimi Cilantro’, which I had sampled during my prior visit, and had no problem having it again. This dish is such a taste explosion, and so beautifully presented. This dish was beautifully prepared, resembling a sun. Pan seared spicy sea bass in a creamy cilantro sauce infused with chili and surrounded by bright green slices of avacado, against a stark white plate. Third in line were ‘Seabass Wraps’, stuffed with shrimp, crab, ginger, chives, and a spicy sauce, fried in a light tempura batter and served with a sesame dressing. I do believe this was my favorite. Words cannot describe it, ‘pure foodgasm’. Fourth, (yes, we were pigs) we were served ‘Lobster Rolls, Tempura battered lobster with avacado, steamed broccoli, cilantro and mango slices wrapped in soybean paper, accompanied with a yuzu garlic curry oil sauce. Maybe this is my favoite? Lat but by far no least were the ‘Scallops a la Orange’! Fresh half-moon scallops sautéed with garlic, chives, fish sauce, and soy orange supreme. What a great choice for a grand finale. I have never had scallops prepared so divinely. Amazingly enough, after eating five different examples of Sushi, I was not at all stuffed, just pleasantly satisfied. Dining at the Sushi Bar is so enjoyable because you have a birds-eye view of the masters at work, creating fine art for the palette. So next time you are in the Cabo San Lucas and have a desire for fresh sushi, look no further that Nick-San Japanese Restaurant. Reservations are suggested, and be sure to come hungry so that you too can work your way through the menu!
