Travel Light & Dress Cabo-Style
The invitation just arrived to join friends in Los Cabos at their villa in the gated community of Pedregal. What to pack, what to wear, what to bring? Most people pack too much. Why not wait until you arrive and go shopping in Cabo San Lucas? Take an empty suitcase because the shopping is outstanding and you will want to dress “Cabo-style” for those sun-drenched days and warm tropical nights.

Get ready for your shopping spree by starting at the sophisticated Plaza Puerto Paraiso located on the Cabo San Lucas marina. If you remember Cabo as a small fishing village a short 10 years ago, you are in for a surprise when you see all the marble, granite, and pizzazz housed in this three-story shopping mall. At Tropica Calipso Swimwear, it’s like walking into a candy store. Upon entering, you’ll find yourself in a sea of colorful bathing suits of all styles and for all shapes, from tanks to bikinis with so many choices of cover ups, you won’t be able to decide! Certainly not just one set. Think separates. One can mix and match tops, bottoms, and pareos that are fun to wear, wrapped and tied any way that suits your fancy. Not all women are created equal and this shop has it all—from underwire, halter, to DD cup sizes, and from brief to waist to the “tankini.” Buy three tops and one bottom or try the tummy control. Tropica Calypso always has a wide selection because it is a year-round swim shop. Forget your hat? Not to worry. The choices here will satisfy the most discriminating shopper with the popular cowboy straws, or floppy, chic sun chapeaux. A few doors away, Animale sports flair and originality with casual to elegant resort and cruise wear for women from Bali, Indonesia.

As you meander through the mall, visit Calzedonia for exquisite lingerie, and stop in at Donnina and Dos Lunas, both ideal for the Los Cabos lifestyle. You’ll find an extensive floor to ceiling selection of La Scala hats and other top brands for men, women and kids at Cabo Hats. This one-stop hat shop has several locations around town.

For day cruises, Cotton Club has matching or mix and match Capri sets, and flowing long dresses for that romantic sunset cruise or dinner on the terrace. For our balmy weather, natural fabrics are perfect. Choose cotton, linen and rayon in comfortable, contemporary Mexican and Latin American designer outfits. This shop is for the fashion-conscious woman wanting classic comfort. Even the hats are of natural woven raffia, with accessories made of wood and bone.

Feet tired? Check out the variety of shoe stores in Puerto Paraiso with good deals on dressy to casual shoes. Shopping can be a lot of work, but somebody has to do it!

Maybe it’s time for a bite of sushi at Sushi Itto, some delicious Mexican cuisine at Los Garcia, and an espresso and the decadent Tiramisú at Amarone, all within Puerto Paraiso.

In Plaza del Sol on Marina Boulevard, Tropica Boutique is a well-stocked shop with all-round resort wear for men, women and children. The Tropica stores also promote the Cabo San Lucas Humane Society with the sale of t-shirts and caps, so if you’re an animal lover, tuck one in.

Plan on dancing the Salsa until the wee hours? Check out Magic of the Moon on Hidalgo near Boulevard Marina, famous for their fine selection of Cabo-made outfits with colorful names such as the “Cha Cha” ruffled off-the-shoulder blouse in multi colors or prints, like the black and white polka-doted number. Designs with the “Ravaged“ finish look, and the hottest, gypsy-bohemian skirts, called “Bo Ho,” that sell for hundreds of dollars more north of the Mexican border, can be bought for a lot less pesos here. Owner Pepita made her name in Cabo with her beautiful, sexy, sequined bustiers that are to die for. She gives personalized service and will help put that Cabo wardrobe together. The look is embellished, the prices aren’t. Choose from daring strappy tops, lovely wraps for those cool evenings, and long or multi-hemmed dresses that show off just the right touch of leg. Coordinate some sexy jewelry, and you’re all ready for that night out on the town. And don’t leave town without a “Cabo Hottie” or “Cabo That’s Hot” knit t-shirt.

Dress your arms in silver for Salsa dancing. You‘ll find an abundance of silver and jewelry stores in town, so stock up on bangles for you and your amigas back at home. And if diamonds are your best friends, Diamonds International has shops around town, and in the Tourist Corridor at the chic new The Shoppes At Palmilla at the Palmilla resort. Known worldwide for their excellent selection and price, this might be the perfect opportunity to treat yourself.

On the marina near Plaza Bonita, UltraFemme and UltraJewels have glamour to go, with sleek and chic new looks in beauty and jewelry fashion, all at Caribbean prices. Forget your sunglasses? Men’s and women’s stylish designs are available to help you look cool in the sun and protect your eyes from harmful rays. If your timing is right, you may be able to experience a make up session by one of the representatives of Chanel or Estée Lauder, while your significant other is checking out timepieces such as Cartier, Hermés, Omega, Raymond Weil, or Mont Blanc. This prestigious store carries some of the most divinely sensual David Yurman jewelry, just in case the lady forgot to pack her favorite piece, or he forgot your anniversary. The perfume bar, premium skin care lines, and over-the-top makeup lines, will have you wanting to change your entire image, maybe to feel racier, sexier, and more glamorous.

The houseguest that’s always welcomed back chooses a thoughtful hostess gift. A unique Lladró from UltraJewels would be a fine choice, or perhaps you’re looking for a handmade treasure or original art to say thank you. A Talavera pottery plate, bowl or jardinière are all highly prized, and both Mexican Pottery on Madero, and Necri, on Marina Boulevard, will have something just right. The fine Mexican folk art at Veryka in Plaza Bonita and at Casa de Alfarero in Plaza Puerto Paraiso are both hard to resist. Upstairs at Plaza Paraiso, Fruta Prohibida is an unusual gallery featuring fine art, and jewelry, from women artists, another “must do” on any Cabo shopping spree. Pez Gordo Gallery, Antigua de México and Artesanía Mágica at The Shoppes At Palmilla are also sure to please the most discriminating shoppers looking for that perfect something.

What about your significant other? For a wide selection of clothes for him, in Cabo, Plaza Puerto Paraiso is your best bet. Classic sportswear reigns at Nautica, browse the mall for other fine shops like Façonnable and La Coste. If you happen to be playing a round of golf at Cabo del Sol, visit the clubhouse pro shop, with an extensive collection of men’s (and women’s) logo attire in the Corridor. At The Shoppes At Palmilla, Tiki Lounge showcases Tommy Bahama’s latest looks, while at Paradise Golf, even a novice will step out looking like a pro with these great looks.
