If its warm, earth-toned walls, oversize Italia map, and old-world chandelier are not enough to transport you, La Trattoria authentic Mediterranean-style dishes will. Juan Castañeda’s spot, a fixture in downtown Cabo San Lucas since 1994, offers diners both a menu replete with traditional Italian classics and a much-needed reprieve from the hustle and bustle of the area’s ubiquitous nightclubs. Nestled in the Plaza Bonita mall, across the street from the raucous El Squid Roe and a minute’s stroll from the marina, La Trattoria provides restaurant-goers with one of the town’s more intimate and mature dining experiences. Low lighting and faux-finished walls make for a romantic backdrop—there’s also outdoor seating, perfect for people watching—while Michael Jackson and Police music videos streaming on the various televisions demonstrate the restaurant’s amazing sense of self, one that extends to the menu. This is still Cabo, after all.

Head chef Carlos Campos has created an extensive menu that combines authentic Italian recipes with fresh Baja-sourced ingredients. Starters include a better-than-average frittura de calamari (de rigueur at any Italian spot worth its salt) and a wonderfully complex spinach salad made with cantaloupe, pears, nuts, balsamic, and a just-right amount of pepperoni. Wood oven–baked pizzas, most notably the Margherita, and entrées such as the lobster agnolotti (lobster-and-ricotta-stuffed ravioli) and garlicky catch of the day are fundamental.

The attentive wait staff, led by manager David Castellanos, can help you pair your meal with any of the restaurant’s recently restructured selection of Italian, Chilean, or Californian vinos. Finish the evening with an espresso and one of La Trattoria’s desserts, including decadent chocolate cake and classic tiramisu, which are transcendent—not unlike the restaurant. La Trattoria is a landmark all its own. Passersby can’t help but notice the glassed-in covered patio and are drawn into this charming little sidewalk restaurant sitting in the very center of downtown Cabo San Lucas. Once inside, this quaint bistro with its soaring ceilings and faux-finished walls resembles a winding little street in Italy, giving it an authentic Italian feel.
