Land anywhere in Mexico can be held in for an unlimited amount of time in a renewable bank trust (fideicomiso). The property when held in this manner can be sold or inherited. The government has taken measures to insure that all real estate transactions are handled transparently. All members of the transaction are now subject to liability including the buyer, seller, real estate agents and agencies on both sides, notaries, and land title companies.

Real estate agents are now regulated through membership in the Association of Real Estate Professionals (AMPI). This association holds its members to the highest ethical and professional standards.
Transactions are handled under the supervision of a third party -- the escrow company -- to guarantee that all funds are dispersed at the proper time -- when all paper work is approved by the notary and in order. Notaries in Mexico are highly regarded and must be appointed by the government. They have all the knowledge and training of a lawyer, but with the power to give documents their official seal.
