David Robert Mandich
Artist and Writer - Cabo San Lucas, Los Cabos, Baja California Sur, Mexico

Artist Biography

David Mandich is an artist and who resides in a Palapa covered house on the beach in San Jose del Cabo near Cabo San Lucas in Baja California Sur.

He received a Bachelors degree at CalArts (Chouinard Art Institute) in Los Angeles California in 1971 majoring in fine art and advertising. Chouinards is where many notable artists starting with Disney learned their crafts. (Don‚t laugh, this is serious). He had advanced MFA studies at Otis Parsons, Construction and Architecture classes at Sylvania College in Oregon, and MBA studies at Seattle City University.

Over the course of his creative life he has had a variety of professions including Continental Chef at a Westin Hotel, a General Contractor in the Pacific Northwest and a Senior Bank Officer at American, Latin and Chinese Banks. He has written for local newspapers and travel magazines in the US and Mexico, and acted in Chinese films.

As Captain of his sailboat Dorado, he cruised California and Mexican waters for four years exploring the many islands and ports of Mexico, writing and painting along the way. Through all his life's adventures and occupations, he has viewed himself as an artist and writer - painting, writing, sautéing, designing, building - even while negotiating bank credits. Business is an art too. As is war, per Sun Tzu the Ancient Chinese general. Mandich's recent paintings are of landscapes with skies and rivers laden with ancient Aztec images floating about the canvas and depictions of other traditional subjects. His work has been described as "powerful, often irreverent, and unique in style".

Most of Mandich's work has been commissioned by architects, designers and art buyers for major corporate collections over the years including 20th Century Fox, Motown Records, VW, Ferrari, Catalina Swimwear, Swank Jewelry, North American Rockwell, Kaiser Hospitals, Gibson Dunn & Crutcher, major hotels and banks. He has exhibited in museums and galleries in the USA and in Mexico.

Art has always been my passion. My foundation in college was fine art. Art has always dominated my outlook in life. Now when I am painting more intensely than ever, I find myself simultaneously writing for newspapers and magazines and in the process, discovering alternate paths of creative expression.
