Hurricane Preparedness in Cabo San Lucas

Helpful Tips when planning for a hurricane in Mexico

Cabo San Lucas is one of the top vacation destinations in Mexico. Most well-known for beautiful blue water, scuba diving and sea life, Cabo has a vast array of resort and vacation life adventures. With a population of close to 69,000 full time residents, Cabo San Lucas is an area that people need to take precaution during tropical storms and hurricanes. Hurricane season in Cabo is from May 15th  through November 30th  each year.

The main thing that residents of Cabo San Lucas should worry about during the storm season is the flooding that occurs yearly during the storms. The drainage system in the city tends to back up and create a lot of flooding in both business as well as residential neighborhoods. Flooding can cause excessive amounts of property damage that can become very costly for residents to repair. Flooding is also very dangerous to people who may be out and about in the city.

Being prepared in advance of the tropical storms or hurricane is imperative for survival. People need to make sure they have an emergency kit put together. An emergency kit should contain enough food and clean water to last at least 3 days. Also, for those who are on daily medication, you need to make sure that you have enough medicine on hand to last at least a week.

You may also want to try to find a way to store non drinking water, such as water to be able to bathe in once the storms have passed through the area. Boiling water for drinking or cooking will also be essential once the storms are over because of debris that enters the water system and can cause illness if not boiled. Residents should also make sure they have kept their trees trimmed down and that chairs, umbrellas or grills are secured during the storms so they won’t fly away and cause damage to homes and buildings.

Storm proofing your home is not guaranteed to keep things completely intact, but it will help reduce the damage that happens during the tropical storms or hurricanes. It is advisable to have Hurricane Glass installed in your windows, but if that is not an affordable option as Hurricane Glass can be quite expensive, then you should try to have at least 5/8 inch wood to cover your windows, hurricane screens or even hurricane shutters when the high winds from the storms is approaching. Windows that are not covered will break and can cause not only property damage, but can also be very dangerous to people in the area. Keep in mind that preparing right before a storm is due to strike is the worst time to begin. Making sure that your windows and the rest of your home have been storm-proofed in advance is the wisest decision that you can make.

You will also want to ensure that your trash can lids have been secured so they won’t blow away and possibly crash through car or home windows. Patio tables, umbrellas and barbecue grills should also be secured before the tropical storms come through the area with their strong winds. Winds can exceed speeds of well over 150 mph and can be quite catastrophic when furniture and other patio items are left unsecured during the storms. Making sure that your home or business is protected from an excess of flying debris will cut down the potential structural damage and will save both time and money on repairs after the tropical storm or hurricane has come through.

Something that can be extremely helpful is to have a generator on hand before the storm. After most tropical storms or hurricanes have hit there is no power for a while. Never run the generator inside of your home though as the gasoline fumes can become deadly. Candles are good to have, but can become dangerous therefore flashlights are recommended to use instead. Be prepared before the storm season and make sure you have flashlights and plenty of extra batteries to last during the time when the power may be out.

The weather in Cabo San Lucas is typically beautiful and sunny throughout the year, but being prepared during Hurricane season is recommended for all residents and vacation goers as well. The more prepared you are, the better outcome for not only your home and property, but for you and those you know as well to be able to survive and have less damage than you would if not prepared.
